Jeremías 42

1 Advertencia a quedarse en Judá
Entonces los líderes guerrilleros, incluidos Johanán, hijo de Carea, y Jezanías,
hijo de Osaías, junto con todo el pueblo, desde el menos importante hasta el más importante, se acercaron a

2 Jeremías el profeta y le dijeron:
—Por favor, ora al Señor
tu Dios por nosotros. Como puedes ver, somos un pequeño remanente comparado con lo que éramos antes.

3 Ora que el Señor
tu Dios nos muestre qué hacer y adónde ir.

4 —Está bien —contestó Jeremías—, oraré al Señor
su Dios, como me lo han pedido, y les diré todo lo que él diga. No les ocultaré nada.

5 Ellos dijeron a Jeremías:
—¡Que el Señor
tu Dios sea fiel testigo contra nosotros si rehusamos obedecer todo lo que él nos diga que hagamos!

6 Nos guste o no, obedeceremos al Señor
nuestro Dios a quien te enviamos con nuestro ruego. Pues si le obedecemos, todo nos irá bien.

7 Diez días más tarde, el Señor
le dio a Jeremías la respuesta.

8 Así que él mandó a buscar a Johanán, hijo de Carea, a los demás líderes guerrilleros y a todo el pueblo, desde el menos importante hasta el más importante.

9 Les dijo: «Ustedes me enviaron al Señor
, Dios de Israel, con su petición y esta es la respuesta:

10 “Permanezcan aquí en esta tierra. Si lo hacen, los edificaré y no los derribaré; los plantaré y no los desarraigaré. Pues lamento todo el castigo que tuve que traer sobre ustedes.

11 No teman más al rey de Babilonia —dice el Señor
—. Pues yo estoy con ustedes, los salvaré y los libraré de su poder.

12 Seré misericordioso con ustedes al hacer que él sea amable para que les permita quedarse en su propia tierra”.

13 »Sin embargo, si se niegan a obedecer al Señor
su Dios, y dicen: “No nos quedaremos aquí;

14 sino que iremos a Egipto donde estaremos libres de guerra, de llamados a las armas y de hambre”,

15 entonces escuchen el mensaje del Señor
al remanente de Judá. Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: “Si están decididos a irse a Egipto y vivir allí,

16 la misma guerra y el mismo hambre que temen los alcanzarán, y allí morirán.

17 Este es el destino que le espera a quien insista en irse a vivir a Egipto. Efectivamente, morirán por guerra, enfermedad y hambre. Ninguno escapará del desastre que traeré sobre ustedes allí”.

18 »Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: “Así como se derramó mi enojo y mi furia sobre la gente de Jerusalén, así se derramará sobre ustedes cuando entren a Egipto. Serán objeto de condenación, de horror, de maldición y de burla; y nunca más volverán a ver su tierra natal”.

19 »Escuchen, ustedes que forman el remanente de Judá. El Señor
les ha dicho: “¡No se vayan a Egipto!”. No olviden la advertencia que hoy les di.

20 Pues no fueron sinceros cuando me enviaron a orar al Señor
su Dios por ustedes. Dijeron: “Solo dinos lo que el Señor
nuestro Dios dice ¡y lo haremos!”.

21 Hoy les he transmitido exactamente lo que él dijo, pero ahora ustedes no obedecerán al Señor
su Dios más que en el pasado.

22 Así que tengan por seguro que morirán por guerra, enfermedad y hambre en Egipto, donde ustedes insisten en ir».

Jeremías 42 Commentary

Chapter 42

Johanan desires Jeremiah to ask counsel of God. (1-6) They are assured of safety in Judea, but of destruction in Egypt. (7-22)

Verses 1-6 To serve a turn, Jeremiah is sought out, and the captains ask for his assistance. In every difficult, doubtful case, we must look to God for direction; and we may still, in faith, pray to be guided by a spirit of wisdom in our hearts, and the leadings of Providence. We do not truly desire to know the mind of God, if we do not fully resolve to comply with it when we know it. Many promise to do what the Lord requires, while they hope to have their pride flattered, and their favourite lusts spared. Yet something betrays the state of their hearts.

Verses 7-22 If we would know the mind of the Lord in doubtful cases, we must wait as well as pray. God is ever ready to return in mercy to those he has afflicted; and he never rejects any who rely on his promises. He has declared enough to silence even the causeless fears of his people, which discourge them in the way of duty. Whatever loss or suffering we may fear from obedience, is provided against in God's word; and he will protect and deliver all who trust in him and serve him. It is folly to quit our place, especially to quit a holy land, because we meet with trouble in it. And the evils we think to escape by sin, we certainly bring upon ourselves. We may apply this to the common troubles of life; and those who think to avoid them by changing their place, will find that the grievances common to men will meet them wherever they go. Sinners who dissemble with God in solemn professions especially should be rebuked with sharpness; for their actions speak more plainly than words. We know not what is good for ourselves; and what we are most fond of, and have our hearts most set upon, often proves hurtful, and sometimes fatal.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH CAHPTER 42

This chapter contains a request of the Jews to Jeremiah, to pray to the Lord for them to direct them, and the Lord's answer to it. The request is made by the captains and all the people, Jer 42:1-3; which Jeremiah undertook to present to the Lord, Jer 42:4; they promising to go according to the direction that should be given, Jer 42:5,6. After ten days an answer is returned, and the prophet calls the captains and people together to hear it, Jer 42:7,8; the purport of which was, that if they continued in the land of Judah, it would be well with them, and they would be safe, Jer 42:9-12; but if they went into Egypt, they should die by the sword, famine, and pestilence, and be a curse and reproach, and never see their own land more, Jer 42:13-18; they are charged with dissimulation and disobedience, Jer 42:19-21; and the chapter is concluded with an assurance of their perishing by the above judgments in the place they were desirous of dwelling in, Jer 42:22.
