Jeremías 43

1 Jeremías llevado a Egipto
Cuando Jeremías terminó de dar este mensaje del Señor
su Dios a todo el pueblo,

2 Azarías, hijo de Osaías, y Johanán, hijo de Carea, y los demás hombres arrogantes le dijeron a Jeremías: «¡Mentira! ¡El Señor
nuestro Dios no nos ha prohibido ir a Egipto!

3 Baruc, hijo de Nerías, te ha convencido para que digas esto, porque él quiere que nos quedemos aquí para que los babilonios
nos maten o nos lleven al destierro».

4 Entonces Johanán, los demás líderes guerrilleros y todo el pueblo se negaron a obedecer la orden del Señor
de permanecer en Judá.

5 Johanán y los otros líderes se llevaron con ellos a toda la gente que había regresado de los países vecinos adonde habían huido.

6 En la multitud había hombres, mujeres y niños, las hijas del rey y todos los que Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, había dejado con Gedalías. El profeta Jeremías y Baruc también fueron incluidos.

7 El pueblo rehusó obedecer la voz del Señor
y se fue a Egipto hasta la ciudad de Tafnes.

8 En Tafnes, el Señor
le dio otro mensaje a Jeremías. Le dijo:

9 «A la vista de toda la gente de Judá, toma unas piedras grandes y entiérralas debajo de las piedras del pavimento a la entrada del palacio del faraón aquí en Tafnes.

10 Luego dile al pueblo de Judá: “Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: ‘Les aseguro que traeré a mi siervo Nabucodonosor,
rey de Babilonia, aquí a Egipto. Estableceré su trono sobre estas piedras que he escondido. Sobre ellas extenderá su dosel real

11 y cuando venga, destruirá la tierra de Egipto. Traerá muerte a los destinados a la muerte, cautiverio a los destinados al cautiverio y guerra a los destinados a la guerra.

12 Prenderá fuego a los templos de los dioses egipcios; quemará los templos y se llevará los ídolos como botín. Limpiará la tierra de Egipto como un pastor que limpia su manto de pulgas, pero él saldrá ileso.

13 Derribará las columnas sagradas que están en el templo al sol
en Egipto, y reducirá a cenizas los templos de los dioses de Egipto’”».

Jeremías 43 Commentary

Chapter 43

The leaders carry the people to Egypt. (1-7) Jeremiah foretells the conquest of Egypt. (8-13)

Verses 1-7 Only by pride comes contention, both with God and man. They preferred their own wisdom to the revealed will of God. Men deny the Scriptures to be the word of God, because they are resolved not to conform themselves to Scripture rules. When men will persist in sin, they charge the best actions to bad motives. These Jews deserted their own land, and threw themselves out of God's protection. It is the folly of men, that they often ruin themselves by wrong endeavours to mend their situation.

Verses 8-13 God can find his people wherever they are. The Spirit of prophecy was not confined to the land of Israel. It is foretold that Nebuchadnezzar should destroy and carry into captivity many of the Egyptians. Thus God makes one wicked man, or wicked nation, a scourge and plague to another. He will punish those who deceive his professing people, or tempt them to rebellion.

This chapter contains the answer of the princes and people to the prophet's message; a relation of their going into Egypt; and a prophecy of the destruction of that land. The persons that gave the answer are described, some by name, and all by their character; and the time of their giving it is mentioned, in which they charge the prophet with a falsehood; impute the whole to an instigation of Baruch, and an ill design of his, and so were disobedient to the command of God, Jer 43:1-4; and went into Egypt, and carried all with them, of every rank, age, and sex, and even Baruch, and the prophet too, and came to Tahpanhes, the seat of the kings of Egypt, Jer 43:5-7; upon this a prophecy is delivered out, concerning the destruction of that country, which is signified by a symbol explained; the person, the instrument of it, is mentioned by name, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; the devastation he should make is expressed by slaying with the sword, and carrying into captivity; by burning the temples of their gods, and breaking their images in pieces, Jer 43:8-13.
