Jeremías 7

1 Jeremías habla en el templo
El Señor
le dio otro mensaje a Jeremías diciendo:

2 «Vete a la entrada del templo del Señor
y dale el siguiente mensaje al pueblo: “Oh Judá, ¡escucha este mensaje del Señor
! ¡Escúchenlo, todos ustedes que aquí adoran al Señor
!

3 Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel:
»“Incluso ahora, si abandonan sus malos caminos les permitiré quedarse en su propia tierra;

4 pero no se dejen engañar por los que les prometen seguridad simplemente porque aquí está el templo del Señor
. Ellos repiten: ‘¡El templo del Señor
está aquí! ¡El templo del Señor
está aquí!’.

5 Pero seré misericordioso únicamente si abandonan sus malos pensamientos y sus malas acciones, y comienzan a tratarse el uno al otro con justicia;

6 si dejan de explotar a los extranjeros, a los huérfanos y a las viudas; si dejan de asesinar; y si dejan de dañarse ustedes mismos al rendir culto a los ídolos.

7 Entonces, les permitiré quedarse en esta tierra que les di a sus antepasados para siempre.

8 »”No se dejen engañar ni crean que nunca tendrán que sufrir porque el templo está aquí. ¡Es una mentira!

9 ¿De verdad piensan que pueden robar, matar, cometer adulterio, mentir y quemar incienso a Baal y a los otros nuevos dioses que tienen,

10 y luego venir y presentarse delante de mí en mi templo a repetir: ‘¡Estamos a salvo!’, solo para irse a cometer nuevamente todas las mismas maldades?

11 ¿No reconocen ustedes mismos que este templo, que lleva mi nombre, se ha convertido en una cueva de ladrones? Les aseguro que veo todo el mal que ocurre allí. ¡Yo, el Señor
, he hablado!

12 »”Ahora vayan a Silo, al lugar donde puse antes el tabernáculo que llevaba mi nombre. Vean lo que hice allí debido a toda la perversidad de mi pueblo, los israelitas.

13 Cuando ustedes cometían estas perversidades, dice el Señor
, yo les hablé de ello repetidas veces, pero ustedes no quisieron escuchar. Los llamé pero se negaron a contestar.

14 Entonces, tal como destruí a Silo, ahora también destruiré a este templo que lleva mi nombre, este templo al que acuden en busca de ayuda, este lugar que les di a ustedes y a sus antepasados.

15 Y los enviaré al destierro fuera de mi vista, así como hice con sus parientes, el pueblo de Israel
”.

16 Persistente idolatría de Judá
»Jeremías, no ores más por este pueblo. No llores ni ores por ellos y no me supliques que los ayude, porque no te escucharé.

17 ¿Acaso no ves lo que están haciendo en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén?

18 ¡Con razón estoy tan enojado! Mira cómo los hijos juntan leña y los padres preparan el fuego para el sacrificio. Observa cómo las mujeres preparan la masa para hacer pasteles y ofrecérselos a la reina del cielo. ¡Y derraman ofrendas líquidas a sus otros dioses-ídolos!

19 ¿Soy yo al que ellos perjudican? —pregunta el Señor
—. Más que nada se perjudican a sí mismos, para su propia vergüenza».

20 Así que esto dice el Señor
Soberano: «Derramaré mi terrible furia sobre este lugar. Sus habitantes, animales, árboles y cosechas serán consumidos con el fuego insaciable de mi enojo».

21 Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, Dios de Israel: «¡Tomen sus ofrendas quemadas y los demás sacrificios y cómanselos ustedes mismos!

22 Cuando saqué a sus antepasados de Egipto no eran ofrendas quemadas ni sacrificios lo que deseaba de ellos.

23 Esto les dije: “Obedézcanme, y yo seré su Dios, y ustedes serán mi pueblo. ¡Hagan todo lo que les diga y les irá bien!”.

24 »Pero mi pueblo no quiso escucharme. Continuaron haciendo lo que querían, siguiendo los tercos deseos de su malvado corazón. Retrocedieron en vez de ir hacia adelante.

25 Desde el día en que sus antepasados salieron de Egipto hasta ahora, no he dejado de enviarles a mis siervos, los profetas, día tras día;

26 pero mi pueblo no me ha escuchado, ni siquiera ha tratado de oírme. Han sido tercos y pecadores, aún peores que sus antepasados.

27 »Diles todo esto, pero no esperes que te escuchen. Adviérteles a gritos, pero no esperes que te hagan caso.

28 Diles: “Esta es la nación que no obedece al Señor
su Dios y que rechaza ser enseñada. Entre ellos la verdad ha desaparecido; ya no se escucha en sus labios.

29 Rápate en señal de luto y llora a solas en las montañas, porque el Señor
ha rechazado y ha abandonado a esta generación que ha provocado su furia”.

30 El valle de la Matanza
»La gente de Judá ha pecado ante mis propios ojos —dice el Señor
—. Han puesto sus ídolos abominables precisamente en el templo que lleva mi nombre, y así lo han profanado.

31 Han edificado santuarios paganos en Tofet, el basurero en el valle de Ben-hinom, donde queman a sus hijos y a sus hijas en el fuego. Jamás ordené un acto tan horrendo; ¡ni siquiera me pasó por la mente ordenar semejante cosa!

32 Así que, ¡atención! Se acerca la hora —dice el Señor
—, cuando ese basurero ya no será llamado más Tofet ni valle de Ben-hinom, sino valle de la Matanza. Enterrarán a sus muertos en Tofet hasta que ya no haya más lugar.

33 Los cadáveres de mi pueblo servirán de comida para los buitres y los animales salvajes, y no habrá quien los ahuyente.

34 Pondré fin a las risas y a las alegres canciones en las calles de Jerusalén. No se oirán más las voces felices de los novios ni de las novias en las ciudades de Judá. La tierra quedará completamente desolada.

Jeremías 7 Commentary

Chapter 7

Confidence in the temple is vain. (1-16) The provocation by persisting in idolatry. (17-20) God justifies his dealings with them. (21-28) And threatens vengeance. (29-34)

Verses 1-16 No observances, professions, or supposed revelations, will profit, if men do not amend their ways and their doings. None can claim an interest in free salvation, who allow themselves in the practice of known sin, or live in the neglect of known duty. They thought that the temple they profaned would be their protection. But all who continue in sin because grace has abounded, or that grace may abound, make Christ the minister of sin; and the cross of Christ, rightly understood, forms the most effectual remedy to such poisonous sentiments. The Son of God gave himself for our transgressions, to show the excellence of the Divine law, and the evil of sin. Never let us think we may do wickedness without suffering for it.

Verses 17-20 The Jews took pride in showing zeal for their idols. Let us learn to be earnest in the service of our God, even from this bad example. Let us think it an honour to be employed in any work for God. Let us be as diligent ourselves, and as careful to teach our children the truths of God, as many are to teach the mysteries of iniquity. The direct tendency of this sin is malice against God, but it will hurt themselves. And they shall find there is no escaping. God's wrath is fire unquenchable.

Verses 21-28 God shows that obedience was required of them. That which God commanded was, Hearken diligently to the voice of the Lord thy God. The promise is very encouraging. Let God's will be your rule, and his favour shall be your happiness. God was displeased with disobedience. We understand the gospel as little as the Jews understood the law, if we think that even the sacrifice of Christ lessens our obligation to obey.

Verses 29-34 In token both of sorrow and of slavery, Jerusalem must be degraded, and separated from God, as she had been separated to him. The heart is the place in which God has chosen to put his name; but if sin has the innermost and uppermost place there, we pollute the temple of the Lord. The destruction of Jerusalem appears here very terrible. The slain shall be many; they having made it the place of their sin. Evil pursues sinners, even after death. Those who will not, by the grace of God, be cured of vain mirth, shall, by the justice of God, be deprived of all mirth. How many ruin their health and property without complaining, when engaged in Satan's service! May we learn to relish holy joys, and to sit loose to all others though lawful.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 7

In this chapter the Lord, by the prophet, calls the people of the Jews to repentance and reformation; reproves them for their vain confidence; and threatens them with destruction for their many sins, and particularly idolatry. The preface to all this is in Jer 7:1,2, the exhortation to amendment, encouraged to by a promise that they should dwell in the land, is in Jer 7:3, but this was not to be expected on account of the temple, and temple service; but through a thorough reformation of manners; an exercise of justice, and avoiding all oppression and idolatry, Jer 7:4-7, their vain confidence in the temple is exposed; they fancying that their standing there, and doing the service of it, would atone for their theft, murder, adultery, perjury, and idolatry; and that they might commit these with impunity; wherefore they are let to know, that so doing these they made the temple a house of thieves; and that for such wickedness, what the Lord had done to his place in Shiloh, which they are reminded of, he would to the temple, and to them, reject and cast them off, Jer 6:8-15, and seeing they also had a dependence on the prophet's prayer, he is bid not to pray for them, for his prayers would not he heard; and he is directed to observe their wretched idolatry, of which an instance is given, whereby they provoked the Lord to anger; and therefore he was determined to pour out his fury on man and beast, and on the trees and fruit of the field, Jer 7:16-20 and whereas they trusted in their burnt offerings and sacrifices, these are rejected, as being what were not originally commanded; but obedience to the moral law, and the precepts of it, which they refused to hearken to, though they were oft called upon to it by his servants the prophets, Jer 7:21-26, and it is foretold that the Prophet Jeremy would meet with the same treatment; that they would not hearken to his words, nor answer to his call; and therefore he should declare them a disobedient, incorrigible, and an unfaithful people, Jer 7:27,28 hence, either he, or Jerusalem, is called upon to cut off the hair, as a sign of mourning; for their rejection of the Lord, occasioned by their sins, and especially their idolatry, of which instances are given, Jer 7:29-31 and it is threatened that the place of their idolatry should be a place of slaughter and of burial, till there should be no room for more; and the carcasses of the rest should be the food of fowls and beasts; and all joy should cease from Judah and Jerusalem, Jer 7:32-34.
