Jeremias 25

Setenta Anos de Cativeiro

1 A palavra veio a Jeremias a respeito de todo o povo de Judá no quarto ano de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, que foi o primeiro ano de Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia.

2 O que o profeta Jeremias anunciou a todo o povo de Judá e aos habitantes de Jerusalém foi isto:

3 “Durante vinte e três anos a palavra do SENHOR tem vindo a mim, desde o décimo terceiro ano de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá, até o dia de hoje. E eu a tenho anunciado a vocês, dia após dia, mas vocês não me deram ouvidos.

4 “Embora o SENHOR tenha enviado a vocês os seus servos, os profetas, dia após dia, vocês não os ouviram nem lhes deram atenção

5 quando disseram: ‘Converta-se cada um do seu caminho mau e de suas más obras, e vocês permanecerão na terra que o SENHOR deu a vocês e aos seus antepassados para sempre.

6 Não sigam outros deuses para prestar-lhes culto e adorá-los; não provoquem a minha ira com ídolos feitos por vocês. E eu não trarei desgraça sobre vocês’.

7 “ ‘Mas vocês não me deram ouvidos e me provocaram à ira com os ídolos que fizeram, trazendo desgraça sobre vocês mesmos’, declara o SENHOR.

8 “Portanto, assim diz o SENHOR dos Exércitos: ‘Visto que vocês não ouviram as minhas palavras,

9 convocarei todos os povos do norte e o meu servo Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia’, declara o SENHOR, ‘e os trarei para atacar esta terra, os seus habitantes e todas as nações ao redor. Eu os destruirei completamente e os farei um objeto de pavor e de zombaria, e uma ruína permanente.

10 Darei fim às vozes de júbilo e de alegria, às vozes do noivo e da noiva, ao som do moinho e à luz das candeias.

11 Toda esta terra se tornará uma ruína desolada, e essas nações estarão sujeitas ao rei da Babilônia durante setenta anos.

12 “ ‘Quando se completarem os setenta anos, castigarei o rei da Babilônia e a sua nação, a terra dos babilônios, por causa de suas iniquidades’, declara o SENHOR, ‘e a deixarei arrasada para sempre.

13 Cumprirei naquela terra tudo o que falei contra ela, tudo o que está escrito neste livro e que Jeremias profetizou contra todas as nações.

14 Porque os próprios babilônios serão escravizados por muitas nações e grandes reis; eu lhes retribuirei conforme as suas ações e as suas obras’.”

O Cálice da Ira de Deus

15 Assim me disse o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: “Pegue de minha mão este cálice com o vinho da minha ira e faça com que bebam dele todas as nações a quem eu o envio.

16 Quando o beberem, ficarão cambaleando, enlouquecidas por causa da espada que enviarei contra elas”.

17 Então peguei o cálice da mão do SENHOR, e fiz com que dele bebessem todas as nações às quais o SENHOR me enviou:

18 Jerusalém e as cidades de Judá, seus reis e seus líderes, para fazer deles uma desolação e um objeto de pavor, zombaria e maldição, como hoje acontece;

19 o faraó, o rei do Egito, seus conselheiros e seus líderes, todo o seu povo

20 e todos os estrangeiros que lá residem; todos os reis de Uz; todos os reis dos filisteus: de Ascalom, Gaza, Ecrom e o povo que restou em Asdode;

21 Edom, Moabe e os amonitas,

22 os reis de Tiro e de Sidom; os reis das ilhas e das terras de além-mar;

23 Dedã, Temá, Buz e todos os que rapam a cabeça;

24 e os reis da Arábia e todos os reis dos estrangeiros que vivem no deserto;

25 todos os reis de Zinri, de Elão e da Média;

26 e todos os reis do norte, próximos ou distantes, um após outro; e todos os reinos da face da terra. Depois de todos eles, o rei de Sesaque^[a] também beberá do cálice.

27 “A seguir diga-lhes: Assim diz o SENHOR dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Bebam, embriaguem-se, vomitem, caiam e não mais se levantem, por causa da espada que envio no meio de vocês.

28 Mas, se eles se recusarem a beber, diga-lhes: Assim diz o SENHOR dos Exércitos: Vocês vão bebê-lo!

29 Começo a trazer desgraça sobre a cidade que leva o meu nome; e vocês sairiam impunes? De maneira alguma ficarão sem castigo! Estou trazendo a espada contra todos os habitantes da terra”, declara o SENHOR dos Exércitos.

30 “E você, profetize todas estas palavras contra eles, dizendo:“O SENHOR ruge do alto;troveja de sua santa morada;ruge poderosamente contra a sua propriedade.Ele grita como os que pisam as uvas;grita contra todos os habitantes da terra.

31 Um tumulto ressoa até os confins da terra,pois o SENHOR faz acusações contra as naçõese julga toda a humanidade:ele entregará os ímpios à espada”,declara o SENHOR.

32 Assim diz o SENHOR:“Vejam! A desgraça está se espalhandode nação em nação;uma terrível tempestade se levantadesde os confins da terra”.

33 Naquele dia, os mortos pelo SENHOR estarão em todo lugar, de um lado ao outro da terra. Ninguém pranteará por eles, e não serão recolhidos e sepultados, mas servirão de esterco sobre o solo.

34 Lamentem-se e gritem, pastores!Rolem no pó, chefes do rebanho!Porque chegou para vocês o dia da matança e da sua dispersão;vocês cairão e serão esmigalhados como vasos finos.^[b]

35 Não haverá refúgio para os pastoresnem escapatória para os chefes do rebanho.

36 Ouvem-se os gritos dos pastorese o lamento dos chefes do rebanho,pois o SENHOR está destruindo as pastagens deles.

37 Os pastos tranquilos estão devastadospor causa do fogo da ira do SENHOR.

38 Como um leão, ele saiu de sua toca;a terra deles ficou devastada,por causa da espada^[c] do opressore do fogo de sua ira.

Jeremias 25 Commentary

Chapter 25

The Jews rebuked for not obeying calls to repentance. (1-7) Their captivity during seventy years is expressly foretold. (8-14) Desolations upon the nations shown by the emblem of a cup of wrath. (15-29) The judgments again declared. (30-38)

Verses 1-7 The call to turn from evil ways to the worship and service of God, and for sinners to trust in Christ, and partake of his salvation, concerns all men. God keeps an account how long we possess the means of grace; and the longer we have them, the heavier will our account be if we have not improved them. Rising early, points out the earnest desire that this people should turn and live. Personal and particular reformation must be insisted on as necessary to a national deliverance; and every one must turn from his own evil way. Yet all was to no purpose. They would not take the right and only method to turn away the wrath of God.

Verses 8-14 The fixing of the time during which the Jewish captivity should last, would not only confirm the prophecy, but also comfort the people of God, and encourage faith and prayer. The ruin of Babylon is foretold: the rod will be thrown into the fire when the correcting work is done. When the set time to favour Zion is come, Babylon shall be punished for their iniquity, as other nations have been punished for their sins. Every threatening of the Scripture will certainly be accomplished.

Verses 15-29 The evil and the good events of life are often represented in Scripture as cups. Under this figure is represented the desolation then coming upon that part of the world, of which Nebuchadnezzar, who had just began to reign and act, was to be the instrument; but this destroying sword would come from the hand of God. The desolations the sword should make in all these kingdoms, are represented by the consequences of excessive drinking. This may make us loathe the sin of drunkenness, that the consequences of it are used to set forth such a woful condition. Drunkenness deprives men of the use of their reason, makes men as mad. It takes from them the valuable blessing, health; and is a sin which is its own punishment. This may also make us dread the judgments of war. It soon fills a nation with confusion. They will refuse to take the cup at thy hand. They will not believe Jeremiah; but he must tell them it is the word of the Lord of hosts, and it is in vain for them to struggle against Almighty power. And if God's judgments begin with backsliding professors, let not the wicked expect to escape.

Verses 30-38 The Lord has just ground of controversy with every nation and every person; and he will execute judgment on all the wicked. Who can avoid trembling when God speaks in displeasure? The days are fully come; the time fixed in the Divine counsels, which will make the nations wholly desolate. The tender and delicate shall share the common calamity. Even those who used to live in peace, and did nothing to provoke, shall not escape. Blessed be God, there is a peaceable habitation above, for all the sons of peace. The Lord will preserve his church and all believers in all changes; for nothing can separate them from his love.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 25

This chapter contains a prophecy of the destruction of Judea by the king of Babylon; and also of Babylon itself, after the Jews' captivity of seventy years; and likewise of all the nations round about. The date of this prophecy is in Jer 25:1; when the prophet puts the Jews in mind of the prophecies that had been delivered unto them by himself and others, for some years past, without effect, Jer 25:2-7; wherefore they are threatened with the king of Babylon, that he should come against them, and strip them of all their desirable things; make their land desolate, and them captives for seventy years, Jer 25:8-11; at the expiration of which he in his turn shall be punished, and the land of Chaldea laid waste, and become subject to other nations and kings, Jer 25:12-14; and by a cup of wine given to all the nations round about, is signified the utter ruin of them, and who are particularly mentioned by name, Jer 25:15-26; which is confirmed by beginning with the city of Jerusalem, and the destruction of that, Jer 25:27-29; wherefore the prophet is bid to prophesy against them, and to declare the Lord's controversy with them, and that there should be a slaughter of them from one end of the earth to the other, Jer 25:30-33; upon which the shepherds, kings, and rulers of them, are called to lamentation and howling, Jer 25:34-38.
