They grumbled1 in their tents and did not obey the LORD.
So he swore2 to them with uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the desert,327
make their descendants fall among the nations and scatter4 them throughout the lands.
They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor5 and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
they provoked the LORD to anger6 by their wicked deeds,7 and a plague8 broke out among them.
But Phinehas9 stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked.1031
This was credited to him11 as righteousness for endless generations12 to come.
By the waters of Meribah13 they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them;
for they rebelled14 against the Spirit15 of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips.a1634
They did not destroy17 the peoples as the LORD had commanded18 them,
but they mingled19 with the nations and adopted their customs.
