When the Sabbathcame, He began3to teach in the synagogue; and the 4manylisteners were astonished, saying, "Where did thisman get thesethings, and what is this wisdomgiven to Him, and suchmiracles as theseperformed by His hands?
3
"Is not this5the carpenter, 6the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not 7His sistershere with us?" And they took8offense at Him.
4
Jesussaid to them, "9A prophet is not withouthonorexcept in 10his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."

1420And KingHerodheard of it, for His name had becomewellknown; and people were saying, "21John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is whythesemiraculouspowers are at work in Him."
15
But others were saying, "He is 22Elijah." And others were saying, "He is 23a prophet, likeone of the prophets of old."
16
But when Herodheard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!"
17
For Herodhimself had sent and had Johnarrested and bound in prison on account of 24Herodias, the wife of his brotherPhilip, because he had married her.
18
For John had been saying to Herod, "25It is not lawful for you to have your brother'swife."
19
26Herodiashad a grudgeagainst him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;
20
for 27Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holyman, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was veryperplexed; but he used to enjoylistening to him.
21
A strategicdaycamewhenHerod on his birthday28gave a banquet for his lords and militarycommanders and the leadingmen29of Galilee;
22
and when the daughter of 30Herodiasherselfcame in and danced, she pleasedHerod and his dinnerguests; and the kingsaid to the girl, "Ask me for whatever* you want and I will give it to you."
23
And he swore to her, "Whatever* you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to 31half of my kingdom."
24
And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."
25
Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
26
And although the king was verysorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinnerguests, he was unwilling* to refuse her.
27
Immediately the kingsent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,
28
and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girlgave it to her mother.
29
When his disciplesheard about this, they came and tookaway his body and laid it in a tomb.
30
32The 33apostlesgatheredtogether with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.
31
And He said to them, "Comeaway by yourselves* to a secludedplace and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and 34they did not evenhavetime to eat.)
32
35They wentaway in 36the boat to a secludedplace by themselves.
Five Thousand Fed
33 The people saw them going, and manyrecognized them and rantheretogether on foot from all the cities, and gotthereahead of them.
34
When Jesus wentashore, He 37saw a largecrowd, and He feltcompassion for them because38they were likesheepwithout* a shepherd; and He began to teach them manythings.
35
When it was alreadyquitelate*, His disciplescame to Him and said, "Thisplace is desolate and it is alreadyquitelate*;
36
send them awayso that they may go into the surroundingcountryside and villages and buythemselvessomething to eat."
37
But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!"39And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spendtwohundred40denarii on bread and give them something to eat?"
38
And He said to them, "Howmanyloaves do you have? Golook!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and twofish."
39
And He commanded them all to sitdown by groups on the greengrass.
40
They satdown in groups of hundreds and of fifties.
41
And He took the fiveloaves and the twofish, and looking up towardheaven, He 41blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to setbefore them; and He divided up the twofish among them all.
43
and they picked up twelvefull42baskets of the brokenpieces, and also of the fish.

Jesus Walks on the Water
4544Immediately Jesus made His disciplesget into 45the boat and goahead of Him to the otherside to 46Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowdaway.
46
After 47bidding them farewell, He left48for the mountain to pray.
47
When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.
48
Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the 49fourthwatch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.
49
But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
50
for they allsaw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "50Takecourage; it is I, 51do not be afraid."
51
Then He got into 52the boat with them, and the windstopped; and they were utterly**astonished,
52
for 53they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart54was hardened.
Healing at Gennesaret
5355When they had crossedover they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.
54
When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,
55
and ranabout that wholecountry and began to carryhere and there on their palletsthose who were sick, to the place they heard He was.
56
Wherever He enteredvillages, orcities, orcountryside, they were laying the sick in the marketplaces, and imploring Him that they might just56touch57the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.
