20 “Eis que envio um anjo à frente de vocês para protegê-los por todo o caminho e fazê-los chegar ao lugar que preparei.

21 Prestem atenção e ouçam o que ele diz. Não se rebelem contra ele, pois não perdoará as suas transgressões, pois nele está o meu nome.

22 Se vocês ouvirem atentamente o que ele disser e fizerem tudo o que lhes ordeno, serei inimigo dos seus inimigos, e adversário dos seus adversários.

23 O meu anjo irá à frente de vocês e os fará chegar à terra dos amorreus, dos hititas, dos ferezeus, dos cananeus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus, e eu os exterminarei.

24 Não se curvem diante dos deuses deles, nem lhes prestem culto, nem sigam as suas práticas. Destruam-nos totalmente e quebrem as suas colunas sagradas.

25 Prestem culto ao SENHOR, o Deus de vocês, e ele os abençoará, dando a vocês alimento e água. Tirarei a doença do meio de vocês.

26 Em sua terra nenhuma grávida perderá o filho nem haverá mulher estéril. Farei completar-se o tempo de duração da vida de vocês.

27 “Mandarei adiante de vocês o meu terror, que porá em confusão todas as nações que vocês encontrarem. Farei que todos os seus inimigos virem as costas e fujam.

28 Causarei pânico^[a] entre os heveus, os cananeus e os hititas para expulsá-los de diante de vocês.

29 Não os expulsarei num só ano, pois a terra se tornaria desolada e os animais selvagens se multiplicariam, ameaçando vocês.

30 Eu os expulsarei aos poucos, até que vocês sejam numerosos o suficiente para tomarem posse da terra.

31 “Estabelecerei as suas fronteiras desde o mar Vermelho até o mar dos filisteus,^[b] e desde o deserto até o Eufrates.^[c] Entregarei em suas mãos os povos que vivem na terra, os quais vocês expulsarão de diante de vocês.

32 Não façam aliança com eles nem com os seus deuses.

33 Não deixem que esses povos morem na terra de vocês, senão eles os levarão a pecar contra mim, porque prestar culto aos deuses deles será uma armadilha para vocês”.

INTRODUCTION TO EXODUS 23

This chapter contains several laws, chiefly judicial, relating to the civil polity of Israel, as concerning witness borne and judgment made of cases in courts of judicature, without any respect to poor or rich, and without the influence of a bribe, Ex 23:1-3,6-8, concerning doing good to an enemy in case any of his cattle go astray, or fall under their burden, Ex 23:4,5, and of the oppression of a stranger, Ex 23:9, and then follow others concerning the sabbath of the seventh year, and of the seventh day, with a caution against the use of the names of idols, Ex 23:10-13, next are laws concerning the appearance of all their males at the three feasts, Ex 23:14-17, and concerning the slaying of the sacrifice of the passover, and bringing the first of the firstfruits of the land, Ex 23:18,19 and then a promise is made of sending an angel to them to bring them into the land of Canaan, where they should carefully avoid all idolatry, and show a just indignation against it, and serve the Lord, and then it would be well with them, Ex 23:20-26, and particularly it is promised, that the Lord would send his fear, and his hornets, before them, to destroy the inhabitants of the land, and drive out the rest by little and little, until they should possess the utmost borders of it, which are fixed, Ex 23:27-31, and the chapter is concluded with a direction not to make a covenant with these people, or their gods, nor suffer them to dwell among them, lest they should be a snare unto them, Ex 23:32,33.
