"But let no man bring a charge, let no man accuse another, for your people are like those who bring charges against a priest.15
You stumble2 day and night, and the prophets stumble with you. So I will destroy your mother3--
my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.4 "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law5 of your God, I also will ignore your children.
The more the priests increased, the more they sinned against me; they exchangeda theirb Glory6 for something disgraceful.78
They feed on the sins of my people and relish their wickedness.89
And it will be: Like people, like priests.9 I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.1010
"They will eat but not have enough;11 they will engage in prostitution12 but not increase, because they have deserted13 the LORD to give themselves
to prostitution,14 to old wine15 and new, which take away the understanding1612
of my people. They consult a wooden idol17 and are answered by a stick of wood.18 A spirit of prostitution19 leads them astray;20 they are unfaithful21 to their God.
They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak,22 poplar and terebinth, where the shade is pleasant.23 Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution24 and your daughters-in-law to adultery.2514
"I will not punish your daughters when they turn to prostitution, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, because the men themselves consort with harlots26 and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes27-- a people without understanding28 will come to ruin!2915
"Though you commit adultery, O Israel, let not Judah become guilty. "Do not go to Gilgal;30 do not go up to Beth Aven.c31 And do not swear, 'As surely as the LORD lives!'3216
The Israelites are stubborn,33 like a stubborn heifer.34 How then can the LORD pasture them like lambs35 in a meadow?
Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone!
Even when their drinks are gone, they continue their prostitution; their rulers dearly love shameful ways.
A whirlwind36 will sweep them away, and their sacrifices will bring them shame.37
