Sing1 to the LORD a new song,2 his praise3 from the ends of the earth,4 you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,5 you islands,6 and all who live in them.
Let the desert7 and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar8 lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela9 sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops.1012
Let them give glory11 to the LORD and proclaim his praise12 in the islands.1313
The LORD will march out like a mighty14 man, like a warrior15 he will stir up his zeal;16 with a shout17 he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.1814
"For a long time I have kept silent,19 I have been quiet and held myself back.20 But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.2115
I will lay waste22 the mountains23 and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands and dry up24 the pools.
I will lead25 the blind26 by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light27 before them and make the rough places smooth.28 These are the things I will do; I will not forsake29 them.
But those who trust in idols, who say to images, 'You are our gods,'30 will be turned back in utter shame.31
"Hear, you deaf;32 look, you blind, and see!
Who is blind33 but my servant,34 and deaf like the messenger35 I send? Who is blind like the one committed36 to me, blind like the servant of the LORD?
You have seen many things, but have paid no attention; your ears are open, but you hear nothing."3721
It pleased the LORD for the sake38 of his righteousness to make his law39 great and glorious.
But this is a people plundered40 and looted, all of them trapped in pits41 or hidden away in prisons.42 They have become plunder, with no one to rescue them;43 they have been made loot, with no one to say, "Send them back."
Which of you will listen to this or pay close attention44 in time to come?
Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel to the plunderers?45 Was it not the LORD,46 against whom we have sinned? For they would not follow47 his ways; they did not obey his law.4825
So he poured out on them his burning anger,49 the violence of war. It enveloped them in flames,50 yet they did not understand;51 it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.52
