Has this house,1 which bears my Name, become a den of robbers2 to you? But I have been watching!3 declares the LORD.
" 'Go now to the place in Shiloh4 where I first made a dwelling5 for my Name,6 and see what I did7 to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel.
While you were doing all these things, declares the LORD, I spoke8 to you again and again,9 but you did not listen;10 I called11 you, but you did not answer.1214
Therefore, what I did to Shiloh13 I will now do to the house that bears my Name,14 the temple15 you trust in, the place I gave to you and your fathers.
I will thrust you from my presence,16 just as I did all your brothers, the people of Ephraim.'1716
"So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea18 or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen19 to you.
Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes of bread for the Queen of Heaven.20 They pour out drink offerings21 to other gods to provoke22 me to anger.
But am I the one they are provoking?23 declares the LORD. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?2420
" 'Therefore this is what the Sovereign25 LORD says: My anger26 and my wrath will be poured27 out on this place, on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground, and it will burn and not be quenched.2821
" 'This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices29 and eat30 the meat yourselves!
