1And when they were escaped , then they knewthat the island was calledMelita.2And the barbarous peopleshewedusnolittlekindness:for they kindled a fire, and receivedus every one, because of the presentrain, andbecause of the cold.3And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, andlaid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened onhishand.4Andwhen the barbarianssaw the venomous beasthangonhishand, they saidamongthemselves, No doubtthismanis a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeancesufferethnot to live .
5Andhe shook off the beastinto the fire, and feltnoharm.6Howbeit they looked when heshould have swollen , or fallen downdeadsuddenly:but after they had looked a great while , andsawnoharmcometohim, they changed their minds , and said that hewas a god.7Inthesamequarterswerepossessions of the chief man of the island, whose name wasPublius;whoreceivedus, and lodged usthreedayscourteously.8And it came to pass , that the father of Publiuslay sick of a feverand of a bloody flux:towhomPaul entered in , andprayed , and laid his handsonhim, and healedhim.9Sowhenthis was done , othersalso, whichhaddiseasesin the island, came , and were healed :
10Whoalsohonouredus with manyhonours ; and when we departed , they laded us with such things as were necessary.11Andafterthreemonths we departedin a ship of Alexandria, which had winteredin the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.12AndlandingatSyracuse, we tarried there threedays.13
And from thence we fetched a compass , and cametoRhegium:andafteroneday the south windblew , and we came the next daytoPuteoli:14Where we foundbrethren, and were desired to tarrywiththemsevendays:andso we wenttowardRome.15
And from thence, when the brethrenheardofus, they came to meetus as far asAppiiforum, and The threetaverns:whom when Paulsaw , he thankedGod, and tookcourage.16Andwhen we cametoRome, the centuriondelivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard:butPaul was suffered to dwellbyhimselfwith a soldier that kepthim.17And it came to pass , that afterthreedaysPaulcalled the chief of the Jewstogether : and when they were come together , he saiduntothem,Men and brethren, though I have committednothingagainst the people, orcustoms of our fathers, yet was I deliveredprisonerfromJerusaleminto the hands of the Romans.18Who, when they had examinedme, would have let me go , because there wasnocause of deathinme.19But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar;notthat I hadought to accusemynationof .
20Forthiscausetherefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because thatfor the hope of Israel I am bound withthischain.21And they saiduntohim,Weneitherreceivedletters out ofJudaeaconcerningthee, neitherany of the brethren that cameshewedorspakeanyharmofthee.22But we desire to hearoftheewhat thou thinkest : for as concerningthissect, weknowthat every where it is spoken against .
23And when they had appointedhim a day, there camemanytohiminto his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God , persuadingthemconcerningJesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets,frommorningtillevening.24Andsomebelieved the things which were spoken , and some believed not .
25And when they agreed notamongthemselves, they departed , after that Paul had spokenoneword , Wellspake the HolyGhostbyEsaias the prophetuntoourfathers,26Saying , Gountothispeople, andsay , Hearing ye shall hear , andshallnotunderstand ; andseeing ye shall see , andnotperceive :
27For the heart of thispeople is waxed gross , and their ears are dull of hearing , andtheireyes have they closed ; lest they should see with their eyes, andhear with their ears, andunderstand with their heart, and should be converted , and I should healthem.28
Be itknowntherefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hearit.29And when he had said these words, the Jewsdeparted , and hadgreatreasoningamongthemselves.30AndPauldwelttwowholeyearsin his own hired house, andreceivedall that came inuntohim,31Preaching the kingdom of God,andteaching those things which concern the LordJesusChrist, withallconfidence, no man forbidding him.
