Elías y Abdías

1 Después de un largo tiempo, en el tercer año, la palabra del SEÑOR vino a Elías y le dio este mensaje: «Ve y preséntate ante Acab, que voy a enviar lluvia sobre la tierra».

2 Así que Elías se puso en camino para presentarse ante Acab.En Samaria había mucha hambre.

3 Por lo tanto, Acab mandó llamar a Abdías, quien administraba su palacio y veneraba al SEÑOR.

4 Como Jezabel estaba acabando con los profetas del SEÑOR, Abdías había tomado a cien de ellos y los había escondido en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y les había dado de comer y de beber.

5 Acab instruyó a Abdías: «Recorre todo el país en busca de fuentes y ríos. Tal vez encontremos pasto para mantener vivos los caballos y las mulas, y no perdamos nuestras bestias».

6 Así que se dividieron la tierra que iban a recorrer: Acab se fue en una dirección, y Abdías en la otra.

7 Abdías iba por su camino cuando Elías le salió al encuentro. Al reconocerlo, Abdías se postró rostro en tierra y le preguntó:—Mi señor Elías, ¿de veras es usted?

8 —Sí, soy yo —le respondió—. Ve a decirle a tu amo que aquí estoy.

9 —¿Qué mal ha hecho este servidor suyo —preguntó Abdías—, para que usted me entregue a Acab y él me mate?

10 Tan cierto como que vive el SEÑOR su Dios, que no hay nación ni reino adonde mi amo no haya mandado a buscarlo. Y a quienes afirmaban que usted no estaba allí, él los hacía jurar que no lo habían encontrado.

11 ¿Y ahora usted me ordena que vaya a mi amo y le diga que usted está aquí?

12 ¡Qué sé yo a dónde lo va a llevar el Espíritu del SEÑOR cuando nos separemos! Si voy y le digo a Acab que usted está aquí, y luego él no lo encuentra, ¡me matará! Tenga usted en cuenta que yo, su servidor, he sido fiel al SEÑOR desde mi juventud.

13 ¿No le han contado a mi señor lo que hice cuando Jezabel estaba matando a los profetas del SEÑOR? ¡Pues escondí a cien de los profetas del SEÑOR en dos cuevas, cincuenta en cada una, y les di de comer y de beber!

14 ¡Y ahora usted me ordena que vaya a mi amo y le diga que usted está aquí! ¡De seguro me matará!

15 Elías le respondió:—Tan cierto como que vive el SEÑORTodopoderoso, a quien sirvo, te aseguro que hoy me presentaré ante Acab.

Elías en el monte Carmelo

16 Abdías fue a buscar a Acab y le informó de lo sucedido, así que este fue al encuentro de Elías

17 y, cuando lo vio, le preguntó:—¿Eres tú el que le está creando problemas a Israel?

18 —No soy yo quien le está creando problemas a Israel —respondió Elías—. Quienes se los crean son tú y tu familia, porque han abandonado los mandamientos del SEÑOR y se han ido tras los baales.

19 Ahora convoca de todas partes al pueblo de Israel, para que se reúna conmigo en el monte Carmelo con los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de la diosa Aserá que se sientan a la mesa de Jezabel.

20 Acab convocó en el monte Carmelo a todos los israelitas y a los profetas.

21 Elías se presentó ante el pueblo y dijo:—¿Hasta cuándo van a seguir indecisos?^[a] Si el Dios verdadero es el SEÑOR, deben seguirlo; pero si es Baal, síganlo a él.El pueblo no dijo una sola palabra.

22 Entonces Elías añadió:—Yo soy el único que ha quedado de los profetas del SEÑOR; en cambio, Baal cuenta con cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas.

23 Tráigannos dos bueyes. Que escojan ellos uno, lo descuarticen y pongan los pedazos sobre la leña, pero sin prenderle fuego. Yo prepararé el otro buey y lo pondré sobre la leña, pero tampoco le prenderé fuego.

24 Entonces invocarán ellos el nombre de su dios, y yo invocaré el nombre del SEÑOR. ¡El que responda con fuego, ese es el Dios verdadero!Y todo el pueblo estuvo de acuerdo.

25 Entonces Elías les dijo a los profetas de Baal:—Ya que ustedes son tantos, escojan uno de los bueyes y prepárenlo primero. Invoquen luego el nombre de su dios, pero no prendan fuego.

26 Los profetas de Baal tomaron el buey que les dieron y lo prepararon, e invocaron el nombre de su dios desde la mañana hasta el mediodía.—¡Baal, respóndenos! —gritaban, mientras daban brincos alrededor del altar que habían hecho.Pero no se escuchó nada, pues nadie respondió.

27 Al mediodía Elías comenzó a burlarse de ellos:—¡Griten más fuerte! —les decía—. Seguro que es un dios, pero tal vez esté meditando, o esté ocupado o de viaje. ¡A lo mejor se ha quedado dormido y hay que despertarlo!

28 Comenzaron entonces a gritar más fuerte y, como era su costumbre, se cortaron con cuchillos y dagas hasta quedar bañados en sangre.

29 Pasó el mediodía, y siguieron en este trance profético hasta la hora del sacrificio vespertino. Pero no se escuchó nada, pues nadie respondió ni prestó atención.

30 Entonces Elías le dijo a la gente:—¡Acérquense!Así lo hicieron. Como habían dejado en ruinas el altar del SEÑOR, Elías lo reparó.

31 Luego recogió doce piedras, una por cada tribu descendiente de Jacob, a quien el SEÑOR le había puesto por nombre Israel.

32 Con las piedras construyó un altar en honor del SEÑOR, y alrededor cavó una zanja en que cabían quince litros^[b] de cereal.

33 Colocó la leña, descuartizó el buey, puso los pedazos sobre la leña

34 y dijo:—Llenen de agua cuatro cántaros, y vacíenlos sobre el holocausto y la leña.Luego dijo:—Vuelvan a hacerlo.Y así lo hicieron.—¡Háganlo una vez más! —les ordenó.Y por tercera vez vaciaron los cántaros.

35 El agua corría alrededor del altar hasta llenar la zanja.

36 A la hora del sacrificio vespertino, el profeta Elías dio un paso adelante y oró así: «SEÑOR, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, que todos sepan hoy que tú eres Dios en Israel, y que yo soy tu siervo y he hecho todo esto en obediencia a tu palabra.

37 ¡Respóndeme, SEÑOR, respóndeme, para que esta gente reconozca que tú, SEÑOR, eres Dios, y que estás convirtiéndoles el corazón a ti!»

38 En ese momento cayó el fuego del SEÑOR y quemó el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el suelo, y hasta lamió el agua de la zanja.

39 Cuando vieron esto, todos se postraron y exclamaron: «¡El SEÑOR es Dios! ¡El SEÑOR es Dios!»

40 Luego Elías les ordenó:—¡Agarren a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno!Tan pronto como los agarraron, Elías hizo que los bajaran al arroyo Quisón, y allí los ejecutó.

41 Entonces Elías le dijo a Acab:—Anda a tu casa, y come y bebe, porque ya se oye el ruido de un torrentoso aguacero.

42 Acab se fue a comer y beber, pero Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo, se inclinó hasta el suelo y puso el rostro entre las rodillas.

43 —Ve y mira hacia el mar —le ordenó a su criado.El criado fue y miró, y dijo:—No se ve nada.Siete veces le ordenó Elías que fuera a ver,

44 y la séptima vez el criado le informó:—Desde el mar viene subiendo una nube. Es tan pequeña como una mano.Entonces Elías le ordenó:—Ve y dile a Acab: “Engancha el carro y vete antes de que la lluvia te detenga”.

45 Las nubes fueron oscureciendo el cielo; luego se levantó el viento y se desató una fuerte lluvia. Y Acab se fue en su carro hacia Jezrel.

46 Entonces el poder del SEÑOR vino sobre Elías, quien se ajustó el manto con el cinturón, se echó a correr y llegó a Jezrel antes que Acab.

Chapter 18

Elijah sends Ahab notice of his coming. (1-16) Elijah meets Ahab. (17-20) Elijah's trial of the false prophets. (21-40) Elijah, by prayer, obtains rain. (41-46)

Verses 1-16 The severest judgments, of themselves, will not humble or change the hearts of sinners; nothing, except the blood of Jesus Christ, can atone for the guilt of sin; nothing, except the sanctifying Spirit of God, can purge away its pollution. The priests and the Levites were gone to Judah and Jerusalem, 2Ch. 11:13, 2Ch. 11:14 , but instead of them God raised up prophets, who read and expounded the word. They probably were from the schools of the prophets, first set up by Samuel. They had not the spirit of prophecy as Elijah, but taught the people to keep close to the God of Israel. These Jezebel sought to destroy. The few that escaped death were forced to hide themselves. God has his remnant among all sorts, high and low; and that faith, fear, and love of his name, which are the fruits of the Holy Spirit, will be accepted through the Redeemer. See how wonderfully God raises up friends for his ministers and people, for their shelter in difficult times. Bread and water were now scarce, yet Obadiah will find enough for God's prophets, to keep them alive. Ahab's care was not to lose all the beasts; but he took no care about his soul, not to lose that. He took pains to seek grass, but none to seek the favour of God; fencing against the effect, but not inquiring how to remove the cause. But it bodes well with a people, when God calls his ministers to stand forth, and show themselves. And we may the better endure the bread of affliction, while our eyes see our teachers.

Verses 17-20 One may guess how people stand affected to God, by observing how they stand affected to his people and ministers. It has been the lot of the best and most useful men, like Elijah, to be called and counted the troublers of the land. But those who cause God's judgments do the mischief, not he that foretells them, and warns the nation to repent.

Verses 21-40 Many of the people wavered in their judgment, and varied in their practice. Elijah called upon them to determine whether Jehovah or Baal was the self-existent, supreme God, the Creator, Governor, and Judge of the world, and to follow him alone. It is dangerous to halt between the service of God and the service of sin, the dominion of Christ and the dominion of our lusts. If Jesus be the only Saviour, let us cleave to him alone for every thing; if the Bible be the world of God, let us reverence and receive the whole of it, and submit our understanding to the Divine teaching it contains. Elijah proposed to bring the matter to a trial. Baal had all the outward advantages, but the event encourages all God's witnesses and advocates never to fear the face of man. The God that answers by fire, let him be God: the atonement was to be made by sacrifice, before the judgment could be removed in mercy. The God therefore that has power to pardon sin, and to signify it by consuming the sin-offering, must needs be the God that can relieve from the calamity. God never required his worshippers to honour him in the manner of the worshippers of Baal; but the service of the devil, though sometimes it pleases and pampers the body, yet, in other things, really is cruel to it, as in envy and drunkenness. God requires that we mortify our lusts and corruptions; but bodily penances and severities are no pleasure to him. Who has required these things at your hands? A few words uttered in assured faith, and with fervent affection for the glory of God, and love to the souls of men, or thirstings after the Lord's image and his favour, form the effectual, fervent prayer of the righteous man, which availeth much. Elijah sought not his own glory, but that of God, for the good of the people. The people are all agreed, convinced, and satisfied; Jehovah, he is the God. Some, we hope, had their hearts turned, but most of them were convinced only, not converted. Blessed are they that have not seen what these saw, yet have believed, and have been wrought upon by it, more than they that saw it.

Verses 41-46 Israel, being so far reformed as to acknowledge the Lord to be God, and to consent to the execution of Baal's prophets, was so far accepted, that God poured out blessing upon the land. Elijah long continued praying. Though the answer of our fervent and believing supplications does not come quickly, we must continue earnest in prayer, and not faint or give over. A little cloud at length appeared, which soon overspread the heavens, and watered the earth. Great blessings often arise from small beginnings, showers of plenty from a cloud of span long. Let us never despise the day of small things, but hope and wait for great things from it. From what small beginnings have great matters arisen! It is thus in all the gracious proceedings of God with the soul. Scarcely to be perceived are the first workings of his Spirit in the heart, which grow up at last to the wonder of men, and applause of angels. Elijah hastened Ahab home, and attended him. God will strengthen his people for every service to which his commandments and providence call them. The awful displays of Divine justice and holiness dismay the sinner, extort confessions, and dispose to outward obedience while the impression lasts; but the view of these, with mercy, love, and truth in Christ Jesus, is needful to draw the soul to self-abasement, trust, and love. The Holy Spirit employs both in the conversion of sinners; when sinners are impressed with Divine truths, they should be exhorted to set about the duties to which the Saviour calls his disciples.

In this chapter Elijah has an order from the Lord to show himself to Ahab, who, going first, and meeting with a servant of his, Obadiah, charges him to tell his master where he was, that he might meet him, 1Ki 18:1-16, and, upon meeting him, desires that all Israel, and the prophets of Baal, might be convened, which was accordingly done, 1Ki 18:17-20, when he expostulated with the people of Israel for their idolatry, mocked and confounded the prophets of Baal, and gave the strongest proofs, to the conviction of the people, that Jehovah is the true God, 1Ki 18:21-39, on which all the prophets of Baal were slain, 1Ki 18:40, and rain in great abundance was given at the prayer of the prophet, 1Ki 18:41-46.
