The Kingdom of Righteousness

1 See, a king1 will reign in righteousness and rulers will rule with justice.2 2 Each one will be like a shelter3 from the wind and a refuge from the storm,4 like streams of water5 in the desert6 and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land. 3 Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed,7 and the ears8 of those who hear will listen. 4 The fearful heart will know and understand,9 and the stammering tongue10 will be fluent and clear. 5 No longer will the fool11 be called noble nor the scoundrel be highly respected. 6 For fools speak folly,12 their hearts are bent on evil:13 They practice ungodliness14 and spread error15 concerning the LORD; the hungry they leave empty16 and from the thirsty they withhold water. 7 Scoundrels use wicked methods,17 they make up evil schemes18 to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy19 is just.20 8 But the noble make noble plans, and by noble deeds21 they stand.22

The Women of Jerusalem

9 You women23 who are so complacent, rise up and listen24 to me; you daughters who feel secure,25 hear what I have to say! 10 In little more than a year26 you who feel secure will tremble; the grape harvest will fail,27 and the harvest of fruit will not come. 11 Tremble,28 you complacent women; shudder, you daughters who feel secure!29 Strip off your clothes,30 put sackcloth31 around your waists. 12 Beat your breasts32 for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vines33 13 and for the land of my people, a land overgrown with thorns and briers34-- yes, mourn35 for all houses of merriment and for this city of revelry.36 14 The fortress37 will be abandoned, the noisy city deserted;38 citadel and watchtower39 will become a wasteland forever, the delight of donkeys,40 a pasture for flocks,41 15 till the Spirit42 is poured on us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field,43 and the fertile field seems like a forest.44 16 The LORD's justice45 will dwell in the desert,46 his righteousness47 live in the fertile field. 17 The fruit of that righteousness48 will be peace;49 its effect will be quietness and confidence50 forever. 18 My people will live in peaceful51 dwelling places, in secure homes,52 in undisturbed places of rest.53 19 Though hail54 flattens the forest55 and the city is leveled56 completely, 20 how blessed you will be, sowing57 your seed by every stream,58 and letting your cattle and donkeys range free.59
