Matthew 5:1-12

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

1 ¹When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on ²the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.

2 ³He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

3 "⁴Blessed are the poor in spirit, for ⁵theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 "Blessed are ⁶those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 "Blessed are ⁷the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 "Blessed are ⁸those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 "Blessed are ⁹the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 "Blessed are ¹⁰the pure in heart, for ¹¹they shall see God.

9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for ¹²they shall be called sons of God.

10 "Blessed are those who have been ¹³persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for ¹⁴theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when people ¹⁵insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.

12 "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for ¹⁶in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
