And they said to him, âIf you will be good to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever. â

The older counselors replied, âIf you are good to these people and do your best to please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your loyal subjects.â

They said, "If you will be a servant to this people, be considerate of their needs and respond with compassion, work things out with them, they'll end up doing anything for you."

And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

Rehoboam answered, âCome back to me in three days.â So the people went away.

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. âHow would you advise me to answer these people?â he asked.

They replied, âIf you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.â

But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

He asked them, âWhat is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, âLighten the yoke your father put on usâ?â
