Tola

1 Después de Abimélec surgió un hombre de Isacar para salvar a Israel. Se llamaba Tola, y era hijo de Fuvá y nieto de Dodó. Vivía en Samir, en la región montañosa de Efraín,

2 y gobernó a Israel durante veintitrés años; entonces murió, y fue sepultado en Samir.

Yaír

3 A Tola lo sucedió Yaír de Galaad, que gobernó a Israel durante veintidós años.

4 Tuvo treinta hijos, cada uno de los cuales montaba su propio asno y gobernaba su propia ciudad en Galaad. Hasta el día de hoy estas ciudades se conocen como «los poblados de Yaír».^[a]

5 Cuando murió Yaír, fue sepultado en Camón.

Jefté

6 Una vez más los israelitas hicieron lo que ofende al SEÑOR. Adoraron a los ídolos de Baal y a las imágenes de Astarté; a los dioses de Aram, Sidón y Moab, y a los de los amonitas y los filisteos. Y como los israelitas abandonaron al SEÑOR y no le sirvieron más,

7 él se enfureció contra ellos. Los vendió a los filisteos y a los amonitas,

8 los cuales desde entonces y durante dieciocho años destrozaron y agobiaron a todos los israelitas que vivían en Galaad, un territorio amorreo, al otro lado del Jordán.

9 También los amonitas cruzaron el Jordán para luchar contra las tribus de Judá, Benjamín y Efraín, por lo que Israel se encontró en una situación de extrema angustia.

10 Entonces los israelitas clamaron al SEÑOR:—¡Hemos pecado contra ti, al abandonar a nuestro Dios y adorar a los ídolos de Baal!

11 El SEÑOR respondió:—Cuando los egipcios, los amorreos, los amonitas, los filisteos,

12 los sidonios, los amalecitas y los madianitas^[b] los oprimían y ustedes clamaron a mí para que los ayudara, ¿acaso no los libré de su dominio?

13 Pero ustedes me han abandonado y han servido a otros dioses; por lo tanto, no los volveré a salvar.

14 Vayan y clamen a los dioses que han escogido. ¡Que ellos los libren en tiempo de angustia!

15 Pero los israelitas le contestaron al SEÑOR:—Hemos pecado. Haz con nosotros lo que mejor te parezca, pero te rogamos que nos salves en este día.

16 Entonces se deshicieron de los dioses extranjeros que había entre ellos y sirvieron al SEÑOR. Y el SEÑOR no pudo soportar más el sufrimiento de Israel.

17 Cuando los amonitas fueron convocados y acamparon en Galaad, los israelitas se reunieron y acamparon en Mizpa.

18 Los jefes y el pueblo de Galaad se dijeron el uno al otro: «El que inicie el ataque contra los amonitas será el caudillo de todos los que viven en Galaad».

Jueces 10 Commentary

Chapter 10

Tola and Jair judge Israel. (1-5) The Philistines and Ammonites oppress Israel. (6-9) Israel's repentance. (10-18)

Verses 1-5 Quiet and peaceable reigns, though the best to live in, yield least variety of matter to be spoken of. Such were the days of Tola and Jair. They were humble, active, and useful men, rulers appointed of God.

Verses 6-9 Now the threatening was fulfilled, that the Israelites should have no power to stand before their enemies, Le. 26:17, Le. 26:37 . By their evil ways and their evil doings they procured this to themselves.

Verses 10-18 God is able to multiply men's punishments according to the numbers of their sins and idols. But there is hope when sinners cry to the Lord for help, and lament their ungodliness as well as their more open transgressions. It is necessary, in true repentance, that there be a full conviction that those things cannot help us which we have set in competition with God. They acknowledged what they deserved, yet prayed to God not to deal with them according to their deserts. We must submit to God's justice, with a hope in his mercy. True repentance is not only for sin, but from sin. As the disobedience and misery of a child are a grief to a tender father, so the provocations of God's people are a grief to him. From him mercy never can be sought in vain. Let then the trembling sinner, and the almost despairing backslider, cease from debating about God's secret purposes, or from expecting to find hope from former experiences. Let them cast themselves on the mercy of God our Saviour, humble themselves under his hand, seek deliverance from the powers of darkness, separate themselves from sin, and from occasions of it, use the means of grace diligently, and wait the Lord's time, and so they shall certainly rejoice in his mercy.

This chapter gives an account of two judges of Israel, in whose days they enjoyed peace, Jud 10:1-5, after which they sinning against God, came into trouble, and were oppressed by their enemies eighteen years, and were also invaded by an army of the Ammonites, Jud 10:6-9, when they cried unto the Lord for deliverance, confessing their sin; but he had first refused to grant them any, though upon their importunity and reformation he had compassion on them, Jud 10:10-16 and the chapter is concluded with the preparation made by both armies for a battle, Jud 10:17,18.
