CEB 1 Tyre's King Hiram sent messengers to David with cedar logs, bricklayers, and carpenters to build David a palace. NIV 1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. CEB 2 Then David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingship was held in great honor for the sake of his people Israel. NIV 2 And David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel. CEB 3 David married more secondary wives in Jerusalem and fathered more sons and daughters. NIV 3 In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons and daughters. CEB 4 The names of his children in Jerusalem were as follows: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, NIV 4 These are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, CEB 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, NIV 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, CEB 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, NIV 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, CEB 7 Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet. NIV 7 Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet. CEB 8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all marched up to find him. David heard this and went out to confront them. NIV 8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them. CEB 9 The Philistines had invaded and were plundering the Rephaim Valley. NIV 9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim; CEB 10 David asked God for advice: "Should I attack the Philistines, and will you hand them over to me?" The LORD answered, "Attack them, and I'll definitely hand them over to you." NIV 10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The LORD answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.” CEB 11 So they marched up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. "By my strength," David exclaimed, "God has burst out against my enemies, the way water bursts out." That's why the place is called Baal-perazim. NIV 11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim. CEB 12 The Philistines left their divine images behind, and David ordered them burned. NIV 12 The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn them in the fire. CEB 13 When the Philistines plundered the valley a second time, NIV 13 Once more the Philistines raided the valley; CEB 14 David again asked God's advice, but God answered, "Don't attack them directly. Circle around behind them and come at them from in front of the balsam trees. NIV 14 so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. CEB 15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, then attack, for God has attacked in front of you to defeat the Philistine army." NIV 15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” CEB 16 David followed God's orders exactly, and they defeated the Philistine army from Gibeon all the way to Gezer. NIV 16 So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer. CEB 17 David's fame spread throughout all lands, and the LORD made all the nations fear him. NIV 17 So David’s fame spread throughout every land, and the LORD made all the nations fear him.
