1 Corinthians 11

ASV 1 Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. ASV 2 Now I praise you that ye remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. ASV 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. NIV 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. ASV 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head. NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. ASV 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven. NIV 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. ASV 6 For if a woman is not veiled, let her also be shorn: but if it is a shame to a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be veiled. NIV 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. ASV 7 For a man indeed ought not to have his head veiled, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. ASV 8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man: NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; ASV 9 for neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man: NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. ASV 10 for this cause ought the woman to have [a sign of] authority on her head, because of the angels. NIV 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. ASV 11 Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord. NIV 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. ASV 12 For as the woman is of the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God. NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. ASV 13 Judge ye in yourselves: is it seemly that a woman pray unto God unveiled? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? ASV 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a dishonor to him? NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, ASV 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. ASV 16 But if any man seemeth to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. ASV 17 But in giving you this charge, I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better but for the worse. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. ASV 18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and I partly believe it. NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. ASV 19 For there must be also factions among you, that they that are approved may be made manifest among you. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. ASV 20 When therefore ye assemble yourselves together, it is not possible to eat the Lord's supper: NIV 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, ASV 21 for in your eating each one taketh before [other] his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken. NIV 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. ASV 22 What, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you? In this I praise you not. NIV 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! ASV 23 For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread; NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, ASV 24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me. NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” ASV 25 In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink [it], in remembrance of me. NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” ASV 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord's death till he come. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. ASV 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. NIV 27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. ASV 28 But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup. NIV 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. ASV 29 For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body. NIV 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. ASV 30 For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. ASV 31 But if we discerned ourselves, we should not be judged. NIV 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. ASV 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. NIV 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. ASV 33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, wait one for another. NIV 33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. ASV 34 If any man is hungry, let him eat at home; that your coming together be not unto judgment. And the rest will I set in order whensoever I come. NIV 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
