1 Kings 17

GNT 1 A prophet named Elijah, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to King Ahab, "In the name of the Lord, the living God of Israel, whom I serve, I tell you that there will be no dew or rain for the next two or three years until I say so." NIV 1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” GNT 2 Then the Lord said to Elijah, NIV 2 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah: GNT 3 "Leave this place and go east and hide yourself near Cherith Brook, east of the Jordan. NIV 3 “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. GNT 4 The brook will supply you with water to drink, and I have commanded ravens to bring you food there." NIV 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.” GNT 5 Elijah obeyed the Lord's command, and went and stayed by Cherith Brook. NIV 5 So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. GNT 6 He drank water from the brook, and ravens brought him bread and meat every morning and every evening. NIV 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. GNT 7 After a while the brook dried up because of the lack of rain. NIV 7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. GNT 8 Then the Lord said to Elijah, NIV 8 Then the word of the LORD came to him: GNT 9 "Now go to the town of Zarephath, near Sidon, and stay there. I have commanded a widow who lives there to feed you." NIV 9 “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” GNT 10 So Elijah went to Zarephath, and as he came to the town gate, he saw a widow gathering firewood. "Please bring me a drink of water," he said to her. NIV 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” GNT 11 And as she was going to get it, he called out, "And please bring me some bread, too." NIV 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” GNT 12 She answered, "By the living Lord your God I swear that I don't have any bread. All I have is a handful of flour in a bowl and a bit of olive oil in a jar. I came here to gather some firewood to take back home and prepare what little I have for my son and me. That will be our last meal, and then we will starve to death." NIV 12 “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” GNT 13 "Don't worry," Elijah said to her. "Go on and prepare your meal. But first make a small loaf from what you have and bring it to me, and then prepare the rest for you and your son. NIV 13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. GNT 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: "The bowl will not run out of flour or the jar run out of oil before the day that I, the Lord, send rain.' " NIV 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’ ” GNT 15 The widow went and did as Elijah had told her, and all of them had enough food for many days. NIV 15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. GNT 16 As the Lord had promised through Elijah, the bowl did not run out of flour nor did the jar run out of oil. NIV 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. GNT 17 Some time later the widow's son got sick; he got worse and worse, and finally he died. NIV 17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. GNT 18 She said to Elijah, "Man of God, why did you do this to me? Did you come here to remind God of my sins and so cause my son's death?" NIV 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?” GNT 19 "Give the boy to me," Elijah said. He took the boy from her arms, carried him upstairs to the room where he was staying, and laid him on the bed. NIV 19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. GNT 20 Then he prayed aloud, "O Lord my God, why have you done such a terrible thing to this widow? She has been kind enough to take care of me, and now you kill her son!" NIV 20 Then he cried out to the LORD, “LORD my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” GNT 21 Then Elijah stretched himself out on the boy three times and prayed, "O Lord my God, restore this child to life!" NIV 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, “LORD my God, let this boy’s life return to him!” GNT 22 The Lord answered Elijah's prayer; the child started breathing again and revived. NIV 22 The LORD heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. GNT 23 Elijah took the boy back downstairs to his mother and said to her, "Look, your son is alive!" NIV 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, “Look, your son is alive!” GNT 24 She answered, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the Lord really speaks through you!" NIV 24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.”
