2 Kings 4

CEB 1 Now there was a woman who had been married to a member of a group of prophets. She appealed to Elisha, saying, "My husband, your servant, is dead. You know how he feared the LORD. But now someone he owed money to has come to take my two children away as slaves." NRS 1 Now the wife of a member of the company of prophets cried to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant feared the Lord, but a creditor has come to take my two children as slaves." CEB 2 Elisha said to her, "What can I do for you? Tell me what you still have left in the house." She said, "Your servant has nothing at all in the house except a small jar of oil." NRS 2 Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" She answered, "Your servant has nothing in the house, except a jar of oil." CEB 3 He said, "Go out and borrow containers from all your neighbors. Get as many empty containers as possible. NRS 3 He said, "Go outside, borrow vessels from all your neighbors, empty vessels and not just a few. CEB 4 Then go in and close the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all those containers. Set each one aside when it's full." NRS 4 Then go in, and shut the door behind you and your children, and start pouring into all these vessels; when each is full, set it aside." CEB 5 She left Elisha and closed the door behind her and her sons. They brought her containers as she kept on pouring. NRS 5 So she left him and shut the door behind her and her children; they kept bringing vessels to her, and she kept pouring. CEB 6 When she had filled the containers, she said to her son, "Bring me another container." He said to her, "There aren't any more." Then the oil stopped flowing, NRS 6 When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." But he said to her, "There are no more." Then the oil stopped flowing. CEB 7 and she reported this to the man of God. He said, "Go! Sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what remains." NRS 7 She came and told the man of God, and he said, "Go sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your children can live on the rest." CEB 8 One day Elisha went to Shunem. A rich woman lived there. She urged him to eat something, so whenever he passed by, he would stop in to eat some food. NRS 8 One day Elisha was passing through Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to have a meal. So whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for a meal. CEB 9 She said to her husband, "Look, I know that he is a holy man of God and he passes by regularly. NRS 9 She said to her husband, "Look, I am sure that this man who regularly passes our way is a holy man of God. CEB 10 Let's make a small room on the roof. We'll set up a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp for him there. Then when he comes to us, he can stay there." NRS 10 Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that he can stay there whenever he comes to us." CEB 11 So one day Elisha came there, headed to the room on the roof, and lay down. NRS 11 One day when he came there, he went up to the chamber and lay down there. CEB 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, "Call this Shunammite woman." Gehazi called her, and she stood before him. NRS 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, "Call the Shunammite woman." When he had called her, she stood before him. CEB 13 Elisha then said to Gehazi, "Say to her, ‘Look, you've gone to all this trouble for us. What can I do for you? Is there anything I can say on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?'" She said, "I'm content to live at home with my own people." NRS 13 He said to him, "Say to her, Since you have taken all this trouble for us, what may be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?" She answered, "I live among my own people." CEB 14 Elisha asked, "So what can be done for her?" Gehazi said, "Well, she doesn't have a son, and her husband is old." NRS 14 He said, "What then may be done for her?" Gehazi answered, "Well, she has no son, and her husband is old." CEB 15 Elisha said, "Call her." So Gehazi called her, and she stood at the door. NRS 15 He said, "Call her." When he had called her, she stood at the door. CEB 16 Elisha said, "About this time next year, you will be holding a son in your arms." But she said, "No, man of God, sir; don't lie to your servant." NRS 16 He said, "At this season, in due time, you shall embrace a son." She replied, "No, my lord, O man of God; do not deceive your servant." CEB 17 But the woman conceived and gave birth to a son at about the same time the next year. This was what Elisha had promised her. NRS 17 The woman conceived and bore a son at that season, in due time, as Elisha had declared to her. CEB 18 The child grew up. One day he ran to his father, who was with the harvest workers. NRS 18 When the child was older, he went out one day to his father among the reapers. CEB 19 He said to his father, "Oh, my head! My head!" The father said to a young man, "Carry him to his mother." NRS 19 He complained to his father, "Oh, my head, my head!" The father said to his servant, "Carry him to his mother." CEB 20 So he picked up the boy and brought him to his mother. The boy sat on her lap until noon. Then he died. NRS 20 He carried him and brought him to his mother; the child sat on her lap until noon, and he died. CEB 21 She went up and laid him down on the bed for the man of God. Then she went out and closed the door. NRS 21 She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, closed the door on him, and left. CEB 22 She called her husband and said, "Send me one of the young men and one of the donkeys so that I can hurry to the man of God and come back." NRS 22 Then she called to her husband, and said, "Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so that I may quickly go to the man of God and come back again." CEB 23 Her husband said, "Why are you going to him today? It's not a new moon or sabbath." She said, "Don't worry about it." NRS 23 He said, "Why go to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath." She said, "It will be all right." CEB 24 She saddled the donkey, then said to her young servant, "Drive the donkey hard. Don't let me slow down unless I tell you." NRS 24 Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, "Urge the animal on; do not hold back for me unless I tell you." CEB 25 So she went off and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. As soon as the man of God saw her from a distance, he said to Gehazi his servant, "Look, it's the Shunammite woman! NRS 25 So she set out, and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, "Look, there is the Shunammite woman; CEB 26 Run out to meet her and ask her, ‘Are things okay with you, your husband, and your child?'" She said, "Things are okay." NRS 26 run at once to meet her, and say to her, Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is the child all right?" She answered, "It is all right." CEB 27 When she got to the man of God at the mountain, she grabbed his feet. Gehazi came up to push her away, but the man of God said, "Leave her alone! She is distraught, but the LORD has hidden the reason from me and hasn't told me why." NRS 27 When she came to the man of God at the mountain, she caught hold of his feet. Gehazi approached to push her away. But the man of God said, "Let her alone, for she is in bitter distress; the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me." CEB 28 She said, "Did I ask you for a son, sir? Didn't I say, ‘Don't raise my hopes'?" NRS 28 Then she said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, Do not mislead me?" CEB 29 Elisha said to Gehazi, "Get ready, take my staff, and go! If you encounter anyone, don't stop to greet them. If anyone greets you, don't reply. Put my staff on the boy's face." NRS 29 He said to Gehazi, "Gird up your loins, and take my staff in your hand, and go. If you meet anyone, give no greeting, and if anyone greets you, do not answer; and lay my staff on the face of the child." CEB 30 But the boy's mother said, "I swear by your life and by the LORD's life, I won't leave you!" So Elisha got up and followed her. NRS 30 Then the mother of the child said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave without you." So he rose up and followed her. CEB 31 Gehazi went on ahead of them. He set the staff on the young boy's face, but there was no sound or response. So he went back to meet Elisha and told him, "The boy didn't wake up." NRS 31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. He came back to meet him and told him, "The child has not awakened." CEB 32 Elisha came into the house and saw the boy lying dead on his bed. NRS 32 When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. CEB 33 He went in and closed the door behind the two of them. Then he prayed to the LORD. NRS 33 So he went in and closed the door on the two of them, and prayed to the Lord. CEB 34 He got up on the bed and lay down on top of the child, putting his mouth on the boy's mouth, his eyes on the boy's eyes, his hands on the boy's hands. And as he bent over him, the child's skin grew warm. NRS 34 Then he got up on the bed and lay upon the child, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and while he lay bent over him, the flesh of the child became warm. CEB 35 Then Elisha got down and paced back and forth in the house. Once again he got up on the bed and bent over the boy, at which point the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. NRS 35 He got down, walked once to and fro in the room, then got up again and bent over him; the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. CEB 36 Elisha called for Gehazi and said, "Call the Shunammite woman." Gehazi called her, and she came to Elisha. He told her, "Pick up your son." NRS 36 Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, "Call the Shunammite woman." So he called her. When she came to him, he said, "Take your son." CEB 37 She came and fell at his feet, facedown on the ground. Then she picked up her son and left. NRS 37 She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground; then she took her son and left. CEB 38 When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. A group of prophets was sitting before him. He said to his servant, "Put on the big pot and cook some stew for the prophets." NRS 38 When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the company of prophets was sitting before him, he said to his servant, "Put the large pot on, and make some stew for the company of prophets." CEB 39 So one of them went out to the field to gather plants; he found a wild vine and gathered wild gourds from it, filling his garment. He came and cut them up into the pot of stew, but no one knew what they were. NRS 39 One of them went out into the field to gather herbs; he found a wild vine and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and cut them up into the pot of stew, not knowing what they were. CEB 40 The stew was served to the men, but as they started to eat it, they cried out and said, "There is death in that pot, man of God!" They couldn't eat it. NRS 40 They served some for the men to eat. But while they were eating the stew, they cried out, "O man of God, there is death in the pot!" They could not eat it. CEB 41 Elisha said, "Get some flour." He threw it into the pot and said, "Serve the people so they can eat." At that point, there was nothing bad left in the pot. NRS 41 He said, "Then bring some flour." He threw it into the pot, and said, "Serve the people and let them eat." And there was nothing harmful in the pot. CEB 42 A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing the man of God some bread from the early produce—twenty loaves of barley bread and fresh grain from his bag. Elisha said, "Give it to the people so they can eat." NRS 42 A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to the man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, "Give it to the people and let them eat." CEB 43 His servant said, "How can I feed one hundred men with this?" Elisha said, "Give it to the people so they can eat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Eat and there will be leftovers.'" NRS 43 But his servant said, "How can I set this before a hundred people?" So he repeated, "Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus says the Lord, "They shall eat and have some left.' " CEB 44 So the servant gave the food to them. They ate and had leftovers, in agreement with the LORD's word. NRS 44 He set it before them, they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the Lord.
