NAS 1 "Then we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as the LORD spoke to me, and circled Mount Seir for many days. NIV 1 Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea, as the LORD had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir. NAS 2 "And the LORD spoke to me, saying, NIV 2 Then the LORD said to me, NAS 3 'You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north, NIV 3 “You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north. NAS 4 and command the people, saying, "You will pass through the territory of your brothers the sons of Esau who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful; NIV 4 Give the people these orders: ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. NAS 5 do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even as little as a footstep because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. NIV 5 Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own. NAS 6 "You shall buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with money so that you may drink. NIV 6 You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’ ” NAS 7 "For the LORD your God has blessed you in all that you have done; He has known your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing."' NIV 7 The LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything. NAS 8 "So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road, away from Elath and from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab. NIV 8 So we went on past our relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber, and traveled along the desert road of Moab. NAS 9 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot as a possession. NIV 9 Then the LORD said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.” NAS 10 (The Emim lived there formerly, a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim. NIV 10 (The Emites used to live there—a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. NAS 11 Like the Anakim, they are also regarded as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. NIV 11 Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites. NAS 12 The Horites formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land of their possession which the LORD gave to them.) They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the LORD gave them as their possession.) NAS 13 'Now arise and cross over the brook Zered yourselves.' So we crossed over the brook Zered. NIV 13 And the LORD said, “Now get up and cross the Zered Valley.” So we crossed the valley. NAS 14 "Now the time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. NIV 14 Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. NAS 15 "Moreover the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from within the camp until they all perished. NIV 15 The LORD’s hand was against them until he had completely eliminated them from the camp. NAS 16 "So it came about when all the men of war had finally perished from among the people, NIV 16 Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died, NAS 17 that the LORD spoke to me, saying, NIV 17 the LORD said to me, NAS 18 'Today you shall cross over Ar, the border of Moab. NIV 18 “Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar. NAS 19 'When you come opposite the sons of Ammon, do not harass them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot as a possession.' NIV 19 When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.” NAS 20 (It is also regarded as the land of the Rephaim, for Rephaim formerly lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin, NIV 20 (That too was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites. NAS 21 a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim, but the LORD destroyed them before them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place, NIV 21 They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. The LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place. NAS 22 just as He did for the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day. NIV 22 The LORD had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day. NAS 23 And the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.) NIV 23 And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor destroyed them and settled in their place.) NAS 24 'Arise, set out, and pass through the valley of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession and contend with him in battle. NIV 24 “Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle. NAS 25 'This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the peoples everywhere under the heavens, who, when they hear the report of you, will tremble and be in anguish because of you.' NIV 25 This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you.” NAS 26 "So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, NIV 26 From the Desert of Kedemoth I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon offering peace and saying, NAS 27 'Let me pass through your land, I will travel only on the highway; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. NIV 27 “Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left. NAS 28 'You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, only let me pass through on foot, NIV 28 Sell us food to eat and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot— NAS 29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God is giving to us.' NIV 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us—until we cross the Jordan into the land the LORD our God is giving us.” NAS 30 "But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass through his land; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to deliver him into your hand, as he is today. NIV 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done. NAS 31 "The LORD said to me, 'See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to occupy, that you may possess his land.' NIV 31 The LORD said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.” NAS 32 "Then Sihon with all his people came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz. NIV 32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz, NAS 33 "The LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him with his sons and all his people. NIV 33 the LORD our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army. NAS 34 "So we captured all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed the men, women and children of every city. We left no survivor. NIV 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed them—men, women and children. We left no survivors. NAS 35 "We took only the animals as our booty and the spoil of the cities which we had captured. NIV 35 But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. NAS 36 "From Aroer which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was no city that was too high for us; the LORD our God delivered all over to us. NIV 36 From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead, not one town was too strong for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them. NAS 37 "Only you did not go near to the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God had commanded us. NIV 37 But in accordance with the command of the LORD our God, you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites, neither the land along the course of the Jabbok nor that around the towns in the hills.
