Luke 22

CEB 1 The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching. NRS 1 Now the festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near. CEB 2 The chief priests and the legal experts were looking for a way to kill Jesus, because they were afraid of the people. NRS 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus to death, for they were afraid of the people. CEB 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve. NRS 3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve; CEB 4 He went out and discussed with the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard how he could hand Jesus over to them. NRS 4 he went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers of the temple police about how he might betray him to them. CEB 5 They were delighted and arranged payment for him. NRS 5 They were greatly pleased and agreed to give him money. CEB 6 He agreed and began looking for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them—a time when the crowds would be absent. NRS 6 So he consented and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them when no crowd was present. CEB 7 The Day of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover had to be sacrificed. NRS 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. CEB 8 Jesus sent Peter and John with this task: "Go and prepare for us to eat the Passover meal." NRS 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it." CEB 9 They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?" NRS 9 They asked him, "Where do you want us to make preparations for it?" CEB 10 Jesus replied, "When you go into the city, a man carrying a water jar will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters. NRS 10 "Listen," he said to them, "when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters CEB 11 Say to the owner of the house, ‘The teacher says to you, Where is the guestroom where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples? ' NRS 11 and say to the owner of the house, "The teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" ' CEB 12 He will show you a large upstairs room, already furnished. Make preparations there." NRS 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there." CEB 13 They went and found everything just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal. NRS 13 So they went and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal. CEB 14 When the time came, Jesus took his place at the table, and the apostles joined him. NRS 14 When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. CEB 15 He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. NRS 15 He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; CEB 16 I tell you, I won't eat it until it is fulfilled in God's kingdom." NRS 16 for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." CEB 17 After taking a cup and giving thanks, he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. NRS 17 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves; CEB 18 I tell you that from now on I won't drink from the fruit of the vine until God's kingdom has come." NRS 18 for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." CEB 19 After taking the bread and giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." NRS 19 Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." CEB 20 In the same way, he took the cup after the meal and said, “This cup is the new covenant by my blood, which is poured out for you. NRS 20 And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. CEB 21 "But look! My betrayer is with me; his hand is on this table. NRS 21 But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table. CEB 22 The Human One goes just as it has been determined. But how terrible it is for that person who betrays him." NRS 22 For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!" CEB 23 They began to argue among themselves about which of them it could possibly be who would do this. NRS 23 Then they began to ask one another which one of them it could be who would do this. CEB 24 An argument broke out among the disciples over which one of them should be regarded as the greatest. NRS 24 A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. CEB 25 But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles rule over their subjects, and those in authority over them are called ‘friends of the people.' NRS 25 But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. CEB 26 But that's not the way it will be with you. Instead, the greatest among you must become like a person of lower status and the leader like a servant. NRS 26 But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. CEB 27 So which one is greater, the one who is seated at the table or the one who serves at the table? Isn't it the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. NRS 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. CEB 28 “You are the ones who have continued with me in my trials. NRS 28 "You are those who have stood by me in my trials; CEB 29 And I confer royal power on you just as my Father granted royal power to me. NRS 29 and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, CEB 30 Thus you will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones overseeing the twelve tribes of Israel. NRS 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. CEB 31 "Simon, Simon, look! Satan has asserted the right to sift you all like wheat. NRS 31 "Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, CEB 32 However, I have prayed for you that your faith won't fail. When you have returned, strengthen your brothers and sisters." NRS 32 but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." CEB 33 Peter responded, "Lord, I'm ready to go with you, both to prison and to death!" NRS 33 And he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death!" CEB 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster won't crow today before you have denied three times that you know me." NRS 34 Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, until you have denied three times that you know me." CEB 35 Jesus said to them, "When I sent you out without a wallet, bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They said, "Nothing." NRS 35 He said to them, "When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "No, not a thing." CEB 36 Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a wallet must take it, and likewise a bag. And those who don't own a sword must sell their clothes and buy one. NRS 36 He said to them, "But now, the one who has a purse must take it, and likewise a bag. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one. CEB 37 I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in relation to me: And he was counted among criminals. Indeed, what's written about me is nearing completion." NRS 37 For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me, "And he was counted among the lawless'; and indeed what is written about me is being fulfilled." CEB 38 They said to him, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He replied, "Enough of that!" NRS 38 They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He replied, "It is enough." CEB 39 Jesus left and made his way to the Mount of Olives, as was his custom, and the disciples followed him. NRS 39 He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. CEB 40 When he arrived, he said to them, "Pray that you won't give in to temptation." NRS 40 When he reached the place, he said to them, "Pray that you may not come into the time of trial." CEB 41 He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed. NRS 41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, CEB 42 He said, "Father, if it's your will, take this cup of suffering away from me. However, not my will but your will must be done." NRS 42 "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done." CEB 43 Then a heavenly angel appeared to him and strengthened him. NRS 43 [Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. CEB 44 He was in anguish and prayed even more earnestly. His sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. NRS 44 In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.] CEB 45 When he got up from praying, he went to the disciples. He found them asleep, overcome by grief. NRS 45 When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, CEB 46 He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you won't give in to temptation." NRS 46 and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial." CEB 47 While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd appeared, and the one called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him. NRS 47 While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him; CEB 48 Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Human One with a kiss?" NRS 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Son of Man?" CEB 49 When those around him recognized what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we fight with our swords?" NRS 49 When those who were around him saw what was coming, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" CEB 50 One of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. NRS 50 Then one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. CEB 51 Jesus responded, "Stop! No more of this!" He touched the slave's ear and healed him. NRS 51 But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and healed him. CEB 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come to get him, "Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest me, as though I were a thief? NRS 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit? CEB 53 Day after day I was with you in the temple, but you didn't arrest me. But this is your time, when darkness rules." NRS 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness!" CEB 54 After they arrested Jesus, they led him away and brought him to the high priest's house. Peter followed from a distance. NRS 54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. CEB 55 When they lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. NRS 55 When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. CEB 56 Then a servant woman saw him sitting in the firelight. She stared at him and said, "This man was with him too." NRS 56 Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, "This man also was with him." CEB 57 But Peter denied it, saying, "Woman, I don't know him!" NRS 57 But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." CEB 58 A little while later, someone else saw him and said, "You are one of them too." But Peter said, "Man, I'm not!" NRS 58 A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, "You also are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" CEB 59 An hour or so later, someone else insisted, "This man must have been with him, because he is a Galilean too." NRS 59 Then about an hour later still another kept insisting, "Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean." CEB 60 Peter responded, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" At that very moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. NRS 60 But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about!" At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. CEB 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's words: "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." NRS 61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times." CEB 62 And Peter went out and cried uncontrollably. NRS 62 And he went out and wept bitterly. CEB 63 The men who were holding Jesus in custody taunted him while they beat him. NRS 63 Now the men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him; CEB 64 They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" NRS 64 they also blindfolded him and kept asking him, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" CEB 65 Insulting him, they said many other horrible things against him. NRS 65 They kept heaping many other insults on him. CEB 66 As morning came, the elders of the people, both chief priests and legal experts, came together, and Jesus was brought before their council. NRS 66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council. CEB 67 They said, "If you are the Christ, tell us!" He answered, "If I tell you, you won't believe. NRS 67 They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." He replied, "If I tell you, you will not believe; CEB 68 And if I ask you a question, you won't answer. NRS 68 and if I question you, you will not answer. CEB 69 But from now on, the Human Onewill be seated on the right side of the power of God." NRS 69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." CEB 70 They all said, "Are you God's Son, then?" He replied, "You say that I am." NRS 70 All of them asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say that I am." CEB 71 Then they said, "Why do we need further testimony? We've heard it from his own lips." NRS 71 Then they said, "What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!"
