Acts 1:1-11

ESV 1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, MSG 1 Dear Theophilus, in the first volume of this book I wrote on everything that Jesus began to do and teach ESV 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. MSG 2 until the day he said good-bye to the apostles, the ones he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. ESV 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. MSG 3 After his death, he presented himself alive to them in many different settings over a period of forty days. In face-to-face meetings, he talked to them about things concerning the kingdom of God. ESV 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; MSG 4 As they met and ate meals together, he told them that they were on no account to leave Jerusalem but "must wait for what the Father promised: the promise you heard from me. ESV 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." MSG 5 John baptized in water; you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit. And soon." ESV 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" MSG 6 When they were together for the last time they asked, "Master, are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time?" ESV 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. MSG 7 He told them, "You don't get to know the time. Timing is the Father's business. ESV 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." MSG 8 What you'll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world." ESV 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. MSG 9 These were his last words. As they watched, he was taken up and disappeared in a cloud. ESV 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, MSG 10 They stood there, staring into the empty sky. Suddenly two men appeared - in white robes! ESV 11 and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." MSG 11 They said, "You Galileans! - why do you just stand here looking up at an empty sky? This very Jesus who was taken up from among you to heaven will come as certainly - and mysteriously - as he left."
