New Living Translation NLT
Common English Bible CEB
1 Come here and listen, O nations of the earth. Let the world and everything in it hear my words.
1
Draw near, you nations, to hear; and listen, you peoples. Hear, earth and all who fill it, world and all its offspring.
2 For the LORD is enraged against the nations. His fury is against all their armies. He will completely destroy them, dooming them to slaughter.
2
The LORD rages against all the nations, and is angry with all their armies. God is about to wipe them out and has prepared them for slaughter.
3 Their dead will be left unburied, and the stench of rotting bodies will fill the land. The mountains will flow with their blood.
3
Their dead will be cast out, the stench of their corpses will rise, and the mountains will melt from their blood.
4 The heavens above will melt away and disappear like a rolled-up scroll. The stars will fall from the sky like withered leaves from a grapevine, or shriveled figs from a fig tree.
4
All the stars of heaven will dissolve, the skies will roll up like a scroll, and all the stars will fall, like a leaf withering from a vine, like fruit from a fig tree.
5 And when my sword has finished its work in the heavens, it will fall upon Edom, the nation I have marked for destruction.
5
When my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens, it will descend upon Edom for judgment, upon a people I have doomed for destruction.
6 The sword of the LORD is drenched with blood and covered with fat— with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of rams prepared for sacrifice. Yes, the LORD will offer a sacrifice in the city of Bozrah. He will make a mighty slaughter in Edom.
6
The LORD has a sword covered with blood; it is soaked with fat from the blood of lambs and goats, from the kidney fat of rams, for the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 Even men as strong as wild oxen will die— the young men alongside the veterans. The land will be soaked with blood and the soil enriched with fat.
7
Wild oxen will fall with them, steers with mighty bulls, and their land will be drenched with blood; its soil soaked with fat.
8 For it is the day of the LORD ’s revenge, the year when Edom will be paid back for all it did to Israel.
8
The LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of payback for Zion's cause.
9 The streams of Edom will be filled with burning pitch, and the ground will be covered with fire.
9
Edom's streams will be turned into pitch, its dust into sulfur, and its land will become burning pitch.
10 This judgment on Edom will never end; the smoke of its burning will rise forever. The land will lie deserted from generation to generation. No one will live there anymore.
10
Night and day won't be extinguished; its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation it will lie waste; no one will ever pass through it again.
11 It will be haunted by the desert owl and the screech owl, the great owl and the raven. For God will measure that land carefully; he will measure it for chaos and destruction.
11
Screech owls and crows will possess it; owls and ravens will live there. God will stretch over it the measuring line of chaos and the plummet stone of emptiness over its officials.
12 It will be called the Land of Nothing, and all its nobles will soon be gone.
12
No Kingdom There, they will call it, and all its princes will disappear.
13 Thorns will overrun its palaces; nettles and thistles will grow in its forts. The ruins will become a haunt for jackals and a home for owls.
13
Thorns will grow up in its palaces, weeds and brambles in its fortresses. It will be a dwelling for jackals, a home for ostriches.
14 Desert animals will mingle there with hyenas, their howls filling the night. Wild goats will bleat at one another among the ruins, and night creatures will come there to rest.
14
Wildcats will meet hyenas, the goat demon will call to his friends, and there Lilith will lurk and find her resting place.
15 There the owl will make her nest and lay her eggs. She will hatch her young and cover them with her wings. And the buzzards will come, each one with its mate.
15
There the snake will nest and lay eggs and brood and hatch in its shadow. There too vultures will gather, each with its mate.
16 Search the book of the LORD, and see what he will do. Not one of these birds and animals will be missing, and none will lack a mate, for the LORD has promised this. His Spirit will make it all come true.
16
Consult the LORD's scroll and read: Not one of these will be missing; none will lack its mate. God's own mouth has commanded; God's own spirit has gathered them.
17 He has surveyed and divided the land and deeded it over to those creatures. They will possess it forever, from generation to generation.
17
God has cast the lot for them; God's hand allotted it to them with the measuring line. They will possess it forever; they will live in it from generation to generation.
