Isaiah 6

CEB 1 In the year of King Uzziah's death, I saw the Lord sitting on a high and exalted throne, the edges of his robe filling the temple. NRS 1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. CEB 2 Winged creatures were stationed around him. Each had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two their feet, and with two they flew about. NRS 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. CEB 3 They shouted to each other, saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of heavenly forces! All the earth is filled with God's glory!" NRS 3 And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory." CEB 4 The doorframe shook at the sound of their shouting, and the house was filled with smoke. NRS 4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. CEB 5 I said, "Mourn for me; I'm ruined! I'm a man with unclean lips, and I live among a people with unclean lips. Yet I've seen the king, the LORD of heavenly forces!" NRS 5 And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" CEB 6 Then one of the winged creatures flew to me, holding a glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs. NRS 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. CEB 7 He touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips. Your guilt has departed, and your sin is removed." NRS 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out." CEB 8 Then I heard the Lord's voice saying, "Whom should I send, and who will go for us?" I said, "I'm here; send me." NRS 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!" CEB 9 God said, "Go and say to this people: Listen intently, but don't understand; look carefully, but don't comprehend. NRS 9 And he said, "Go and say to this people: "Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.' CEB 10 Make the minds of this people dull. Make their ears deaf and their eyes blind, so they can't see with their eyes or hear with their ears, or understand with their minds, and turn, and be healed." NRS 10 Make the mind of this people dull, and stop their ears, and shut their eyes, so that they may not look with their eyes, and listen with their ears, and comprehend with their minds, and turn and be healed." CEB 11 I said, "How long, Lord?" And God said, "Until cities lie ruined with no one living in them, until there are houses without people and the land is left devastated." NRS 11 Then I said, "How long, O Lord?" And he said: "Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is utterly desolate; CEB 12 The LORD will send the people far away, and the land will be completely abandoned. NRS 12 until the Lord sends everyone far away, and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land. CEB 13 Even if one-tenth remain there, they will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak, which when it is cut down leaves a stump. Its stump is a holy seed. NRS 13 Even if a tenth part remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak whose stump remains standing when it is felled." The holy seed is its stump.
