John 8:12-30

ESV 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." MSG 12 Jesus once again addressed them: "I am the world's Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in." ESV 13 So the Pharisees said to him, "You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true." MSG 13 The Pharisees objected, "All we have is your word on this. We need more than this to go on." ESV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. MSG 14 Jesus replied, "You're right that you only have my word. But you can depend on it being true. I know where I've come from and where I go next. You don't know where I'm from or where I'm headed. ESV 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. MSG 15 You decide according to what you can see and touch. I don't make judgments like that. ESV 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. MSG 16 But even if I did, my judgment would be true because I wouldn't make it out of the narrowness of my experience but in the largeness of the One who sent me, the Father. ESV 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. MSG 17 That fulfills the conditions set down in God's Law: that you can count on the testimony of two witnesses. ESV 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me." MSG 18 And that is what you have: You have my word and you have the word of the Father who sent me." ESV 19 They said to him therefore, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." MSG 19 They said, "Where is this so-called Father of yours?" Jesus said, "You're looking right at me and you don't see me. How do you expect to see the Father? If you knew me, you would at the same time know the Father." ESV 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. MSG 20 He gave this speech in the Treasury while teaching in the Temple. No one arrested him because his time wasn't yet up. ESV 21 So he said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come." MSG 21 Then he went over the same ground again. "I'm leaving and you are going to look for me, but you're missing God in this and are headed for a dead end. There is no way you can come with me." ESV 22 So the Jews said, "Will he kill himself, since he says, 'Where I am going, you cannot come'?" MSG 22 The Jews said, "So, is he going to kill himself? Is that what he means by 'You can't come with me'?" ESV 23 He said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. MSG 23 Jesus said, "You're tied down to the mundane; I'm in touch with what is beyond your horizons. You live in terms of what you see and touch. I'm living on other terms. ESV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins." MSG 24 I told you that you were missing God in all this. You're at a dead end. If you won't believe I am who I say I am, you're at the dead end of sins. You're missing God in your lives." ESV 25 So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. MSG 25 They said to him, "Just who are you anyway?" ESV 26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him." MSG 26 I have so many things to say that concern you, judgments to make that affect you, but if you don't accept the trustworthiness of the One who commanded my words and acts, none of it matters. That is who you are questioning - not me but the One who sent me." ESV 27 They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. MSG 27 They still didn't get it, didn't realize that he was referring to the Father. ESV 28 So Jesus said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. MSG 28 So Jesus tried again. "When you raise up the Son of Man, then you will know who I am - that I'm not making this up, but speaking only what the Father taught me. ESV 29 And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him." MSG 29 The One who sent me stays with me. He doesn't abandon me. He sees how much joy I take in pleasing him." ESV 30 As he was saying these things, many believed in him. MSG 30 When he put it in these terms, many people decided to believe.
