Joshua 10

WEB 1 Now it happened, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; NIV 1 Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies. WEB 2 that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men of it were mighty. NIV 2 He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. WEB 3 Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piram king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, NIV 3 So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon. WEB 4 Come up to me, and help me, and let us strike Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. NIV 4 “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.” WEB 5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it. NIV 5 Then the five kings of the Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon—joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it. WEB 6 The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Don't slack your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us. NIV 6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.” WEB 7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. NIV 7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men. WEB 8 Yahweh said to Joshua, Don't fear them: for I have delivered them into your hands; there shall not a man of them stand before you. NIV 8 The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.” WEB 9 Joshua therefore came on them suddenly; [for] he went up from Gilgal all the night. NIV 9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. WEB 10 Yahweh confused them before Israel, and he killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them to Azekah, and to Makkedah. NIV 10 The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, so Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. WEB 11 It happened, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Yahweh cast down great stones from the sky on them to Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel killed with the sword. NIV 11 As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. WEB 12 Then spoke Joshua to Yahweh in the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand you still on Gibeon; You, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon. NIV 12 On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.” WEB 13 The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn't this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of the sky, and didn't hurry to go down about a whole day. NIV 13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. WEB 14 There was no day like that before it or after it, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man: for Yahweh fought for Israel. NIV 14 There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a human being. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel! WEB 15 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal. NIV 15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal. WEB 16 These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. NIV 16 Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. WEB 17 It was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah. NIV 17 When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, WEB 18 Joshua said, Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them: NIV 18 he said, “Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. WEB 19 but don't stay; pursue after your enemies, and strike the hindmost of them; don't allow them to enter into their cities: for Yahweh your God has delivered them into your hand. NIV 19 But don’t stop; pursue your enemies! Attack them from the rear and don’t let them reach their cities, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand.” WEB 20 It happened, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of killing them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, NIV 20 So Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely, but a few survivors managed to reach their fortified cities. WEB 21 that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. NIV 21 The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites. WEB 22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five kings to me out of the cave. NIV 22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” WEB 23 They did so, and brought forth those five kings to him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon. NIV 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. WEB 24 It happened, when they brought forth those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings. They came near, and put their feet on the necks of them. NIV 24 When they had brought these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks. WEB 25 Joshua said to them, Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall Yahweh do to all your enemies against whom you fight. NIV 25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” WEB 26 Afterward Joshua struck them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging on the trees until the evening. NIV 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening. WEB 27 It happened at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave in which they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, to this very day. NIV 27 At sunset Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day. WEB 28 Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and the king of it: he utterly destroyed them and all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. NIV 28 That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. WEB 29 Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah: NIV 29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it. WEB 30 and Yahweh delivered it also, and the king of it, into the hand of Israel; and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did to the king of it as he had done to the king of Jericho. NIV 30 The LORD also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. WEB 31 Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it: NIV 31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish; he took up positions against it and attacked it. WEB 32 and Yahweh delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah. NIV 32 The LORD gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. WEB 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. NIV 33 Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left. WEB 34 Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, to Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it; NIV 34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon; they took up positions against it and attacked it. WEB 35 and they took it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls who were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. NIV 35 They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish. WEB 36 Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, to Hebron; and they fought against it: NIV 36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and attacked it. WEB 37 and they took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and the king of it, and all the cities of it, and all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls who were therein. NIV 37 They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it. WEB 38 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it: NIV 38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir. WEB 39 and he took it, and the king of it, and all the cities of it; and they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls who were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king of it; as he had done also to Libnah, and to the king of it. NIV 39 They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron. WEB 40 So Joshua struck all the land, the hill-country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, commanded. NIV 40 So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills and the mountain slopes, together with all their kings. He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded. WEB 41 Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea even to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even to Gibeon. NIV 41 Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza and from the whole region of Goshen to Gibeon. WEB 42 All these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because Yahweh, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. NIV 42 All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. WEB 43 Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp to Gilgal. NIV 43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
