Judges 21

LEB 1 The men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, saying, "None of us will give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife." NIV 1 The men of Israel had taken an oath at Mizpah: “Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite.” LEB 2 And the people of Bethel came and sat there until evening before God, and they lifted their voices and {wept bitterly}. NIV 2 The people went to Bethel, where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly. LEB 3 And they said, "Why, Yahweh, God of Israel, has it happened today in Israel that one tribe is lacking from Israel?" NIV 3 “LORD, God of Israel,” they cried, “why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing from Israel today?” LEB 4 On the next day the people rose early, and they built there an altar and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. NIV 4 Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. LEB 5 And the {Israelites} said, "Who in the assembly has not come up from all the tribes of Israel to Yahweh?" For a solemn oath was [taken] concerning whoever did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah, saying, "He will certainly be put to death." NIV 5 Then the Israelites asked, “Who from all the tribes of Israel has failed to assemble before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah was to be put to death. LEB 6 But the {Israelites} had compassion for Benjamin, their relatives, and they said, "Today one tribe is cut off from Israel. NIV 6 Now the Israelites grieved for the tribe of Benjamin, their fellow Israelites. “Today one tribe is cut off from Israel,” they said. LEB 7 What will we do for them--for the [ones] being left over--for wives? For we have sworn by Yahweh not to give to them our daughters as wives." NIV 7 “How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?” LEB 8 They asked, "Which one is there from the tribes of Israel who did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah?" And behold, no one came from Jabesh-gilead to the camp, to the assembly. NIV 8 Then they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah?” They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the camp for the assembly. LEB 9 The people were counted, and no one was there from the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead. NIV 9 For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there. LEB 10 And the congregation sent there twelve thousand men from the troops, and they commanded them, saying, "Go, strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with {the edge of the sword}, and the women and children. NIV 10 So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children. LEB 11 This is the thing you will do: {you will destroy} every man and {every woman who had sex with a man}." NIV 11 “This is what you are to do,” they said. “Kill every male and every woman who is not a virgin.” LEB 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins who had not {had sex with a man}, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan. NIV 12 They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh in Canaan. LEB 13 Then the congregation sent and spoke all [this] to the descendants of Benjamin who [were] at the rock of Rimmon, and {they assured them they would not be hurt}. NIV 13 Then the whole assembly sent an offer of peace to the Benjamites at the rock of Rimmon. LEB 14 And Benjamin returned at that time, and they gave to them the women whom they kept alive from Jabesh-gilead; but they were not enough for them. NIV 14 So the Benjamites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them. LEB 15 And the people felt sorry for Benjamin because {Yahweh weakened the tribes of Israel}. NIV 15 The people grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a gap in the tribes of Israel. LEB 16 So the elders of the congregation said, "What should we do for the remaining [ones] for wives, since the women from Benjamin have been destroyed?" NIV 16 And the elders of the assembly said, “With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left? LEB 17 And they said, "[There must be] a remnant for Benjamin, so that a tribe will not be blotted out from Israel. NIV 17 The Benjamite survivors must have heirs,” they said, “so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out. LEB 18 But we cannot give them wives from our daughters." (For the {Israelites} swore, saying, "Cursed be [anyone] who gives a wife to Benjamin.") NIV 18 We can’t give them our daughters as wives, since we Israelites have taken this oath: ‘Cursed be anyone who gives a wife to a Benjamite.’ LEB 19 And they said, "Look, the annual feast of Yahweh [is] in Shiloh, which [is] to the north of Bethel, {east} of [the] main road that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah. NIV 19 But look, there is the annual festival of the LORD in Shiloh, which lies north of Bethel, east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.” LEB 20 They instructed the descendants of Benjamin, saying, "Go, lie in ambush in the vineyards, NIV 20 So they instructed the Benjamites, saying, “Go and hide in the vineyards LEB 21 and watch and look; when the daughters of Shiloh dance in the dances, come out from the vineyards and seize for yourselves a wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. NIV 21 and watch. When the young women of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing, rush from the vineyards and each of you seize one of them to be your wife. Then return to the land of Benjamin. LEB 22 And if their fathers or their brothers complain to us, we will say to them, 'Allow us to have them, because we did not capture a wife for each man in the battle, and because you did not give [them] to them, {or else} you would have been guilty.'" NIV 22 When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Do us the favor of helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war. You will not be guilty of breaking your oath because you did not give your daughters to them.’ ” LEB 23 The descendants of Benjamin did likewise, and they took wives for each of them from the dancers whom they seized, and they went and returned to their territory, and they rebuilt the cities and they lived in them. NIV 23 So that is what the Benjamites did. While the young women were dancing, each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and settled in them. LEB 24 So the {Israelites} dispersed from there at that time according to tribe and family; and they went out from there, each one to their own territory. NIV 24 At that time the Israelites left that place and went home to their tribes and clans, each to his own inheritance. LEB 25 In those days there was no king in Israel; each one did what was right in his own eyes. NIV 25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.
