Numbers 25

LXX 1 And Israel sojourned in Sattin, and the people profaned itself by going a-whoring after the daughters of Moab. NIV 1 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, LXX 2 And they called them to the sacrifices of their idols; and the people ate of their sacrifices, and worshipped their idols. NIV 2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. LXX 3 And Israel consecrated themselves to Beel-phegor; and the Lord was very angry with Israel. NIV 3 So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the LORD’s anger burned against them. LXX 4 And the Lord said to Moses, Take all the princes of the people, and make them examples for the Lord in the face of the sun, and the anger of the Lord shall be turned away from Israel. NIV 4 The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORD’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.” LXX 5 And Moses said to the tribes of Israel, Slay ye every one his friend that is consecrated to Beel-phegor. NIV 5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.” LXX 6 And, behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought his brother to a Madianitish woman before Moses, and before all the congregation of the children of Israel; and they were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of witness. NIV 6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. LXX 7 And Phinees the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose out of the midst of the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand, NIV 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand LXX 8 and went in after the Israelitish man into the chamber, and pierced them both through, both the Israelitish man, and the woman through her womb; and the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. NIV 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; LXX 9 And those that died in the plague were four and twenty thousand. NIV 9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000. LXX 10 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 10 The LORD said to Moses, LXX 11 Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest has caused my wrath to cease from the children of Israel, when I was exceedingly jealous among them, and I did not consume the children of Israel in my jealousy. NIV 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. LXX 12 Thus do thou say , Behold, I give him a covenant of peace: NIV 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. LXX 13 and he and his seed after him shall have a perpetual covenant of priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel. NIV 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.” LXX 14 Now the name of the smitten Israelitish man, who was smitten with the Madianitish woman, Zambri son of Salmon, prince of a house of the tribe of Symeon. NIV 14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. LXX 15 And the name of the Madianitish woman who was smitten, Chasbi, daughter of Sur, a prince of the nation of Ommoth: it is a chief house among the people of Madiam. NIV 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family. LXX 16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying, NIV 16 The LORD said to Moses, LXX 17 Plague the Madianites as enemies, and smite them, NIV 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. LXX 18 for they are enemies to you by the treachery wherein they ensnare you through Phogor, and through Chasbi their sister, daughter of a prince of Madiam, who was smitten in the day of the plague because of Phogor. NIV 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
