New International Version NIV
Common English Bible CEB
1 Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
1
Why do you stand so far away, LORD, hiding yourself in troubling times?
2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
2
Meanwhile, the wicked are proudly in hot pursuit of those who suffer. Let them get caught in the very same schemes they've thought up!
3 He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
3
The wicked brag about their body's cravings; the greedy reject the LORD, cursing.
4 In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
4
At the peak of their wrath, the wicked don't seek God: There's no God— that's what they are always thinking.
5 His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies.
5
Their ways are always twisted. Your rules are too lofty for them. They snort at all their foes.
6 He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.” He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”
6
They think to themselves, We'll never stumble. We'll never encounter any resistance.
7 His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
7
Their mouths are filled with curses, dishonesty, violence. Under their tongues lie troublemaking and wrongdoing.
8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
8
They wait in a place perfect for ambush; from their hiding places they kill innocent people; their eyes spot those who are helpless.
9 like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
9
They lie in ambush in secret places, like a lion in its lair. They lie in ambush so they can seize those who suffer! They seize the poor, all right, dragging them off in their nets.
10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
10
Their helpless victims are crushed; they collapse, falling prey to the strength of the wicked.
11 He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.”
11
The wicked think to themselves: God has forgotten. God has hidden his face. God never sees anything!
12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
12
Get up, LORD! Get your fist ready, God! Don't forget the ones who suffer!
13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account”?
13
Why do the wicked reject God? Why do they think to themselves that you won't find out?
14 But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
14
But you do see! You do see troublemaking and grief, and you do something about it! The helpless leave it all to you. You are the orphan's helper.
15 Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out.
15
Break the arms of those who are wicked and evil. Seek out their wickedness until there's no more to find.
16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
16
The LORD rules forever and always! The nations will vanish from his land.
17 You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
17
LORD, you listen to the desires of those who suffer. You steady their hearts; you listen closely to them,
18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.
18
to establish justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that people of the land will never again be terrified.
