Psalm 139

RHE

NRS

1 (138-1) <Unto the end, a psalm of David.> Lord, thou hast proved me, and known me:
1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
2 (138-2) Thou hast known my sitting down, and my rising up.
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.
3 (138-3) Thou hast understood my thoughts afar off: my path and my line thou hast searched out.
3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 (138-4) And thou hast foreseen all my ways: for there is no speech in my tongue.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.
5 (138-5) Behold, O Lord, thou hast known all things, the last and those of old: thou hast formed me, and hast laid thy hand upon me.
5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
6 (138-6) Thy knowledge is become wonderful to me: it is high, and I cannot reach to it.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.
7 (138-7) Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy face?
7 Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?
8 (138-8) If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: if I descend into hell, thou art present.
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
9 (138-9) If I take my wings early in the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea:
9 If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10 (138-10) Even there also shall thy hand lead me: and thy right hand shall hold me.
10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.
11 (138-11) And I said: Perhaps darkness shall cover me: and night shall be my light in my pleasures.
11 If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,"
12 (138-12) But darkness shall not be dark to thee, and night shall be light all the day: the darkness thereof, and the light thereof are alike to thee.
12 even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.
13 (138-13) For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast protected me from my mother’s womb.
13 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
14 (138-14) I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: wonderful are thy works, and my soul knoweth right well.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
15 (138-15) My bone is not hidden from thee, which thou hast made in secret: and my substance in the lower parts of the earth.
15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 (138-16) Thy eyes did see my imperfect being, and in thy book all shall be written: days shall be formed, and no one in them.
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.
17 (138-17) But to me thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honourable: their principality is exceedingly strengthened.
17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
18 (138-18) I will number them, and they shall be multiplied above the sand, I rose up and am still with thee.
18 I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end —I am still with you.
19 (138-19) If thou wilt kill the wicked, O God: ye men of blood, depart from me:
19 O that you would kill the wicked, O God, and that the bloodthirsty would depart from me—
20 (138-20) Because you say in thought: They shall receive thy cities in vain.
20 those who speak of you maliciously, and lift themselves up against you for evil!
21 (138-21) Have I not hated them, O Lord, that hated thee: and pined away because of thy enemies?
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?
22 (138-22) I have hated them with a perfect hatred: and they are become enemies to me.
22 I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies.
23 (138-23) Prove me, O God, and know my heart: examine me, and know my paths.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.
24 (138-24) And see if there be in me the way of iniquity: and lead me in the eternal way.
24 See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
