English Standard Version ESV
The Message Bible MSG
1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.
1
God, the one and only - I'll wait as long as he says. Everything I need comes from him, so why not?
2 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
2
He's solid rock under my feet, breathing room for my soul, An impregnable castle: I'm set for life.
3 How long will all of you attack a man to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
3
How long will you gang up on me? How long will you run with the bullies? There's nothing to you, any of you - rotten floorboards, worm-eaten rafters,
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah
4
Anthills plotting to bring down mountains, far gone in make-believe. You talk a good line, but every "blessing" breathes a curse.
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.
5
God, the one and only - I'll wait as long as he says. Everything I hope for comes from him, so why not?
6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
6
He's solid rock under my feet, breathing room for my soul, An impregnable castle: I'm set for life.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
7
My help and glory are in God
8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
8
So trust him absolutely, people; lay your lives on the line for him. God is a safe place to be.
9 Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath.
9
Man as such is smoke, woman as such, a mirage. Put them together, they're nothing; two times nothing is nothing.
10 Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
10
And a windfall, if it comes - don't make too much of it.
11 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,
11
God said this once and for all; how many times Have I heard it repeated? "Strength comes Straight from God."
12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.
12
Love to you, Lord God! You pay a fair wage for a good day's work!
