New Living Translation NLT
Common English Bible CEB
1 I cry out to God; yes, I shout. Oh, that God would listen to me!
1
I cry out loud to God— out loud to God so that he can hear me!
2 When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted.
2
During the day when I'm in trouble I look for my Lord. At night my hands are still outstretched and don't grow numb; my whole being refuses to be comforted.
3 I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Interlude
3
I remember God and I moan. I complain, and my spirit grows tired. Selah
4 You don’t let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray!
4
You've kept my eyelids from closing. I'm so upset I can't even speak.
5 I think of the good old days, long since ended,
5
I think about days long past; I remember years that seem an eternity in the past.
6 when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the difference now.
6
I meditate with my heart at night; I complain, and my spirit keeps searching:
7 Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me?
7
"Will my Lord reject me forever? Will he never be pleased again?
8 Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed?
8
Has his faithful love come to a complete end? Is his promise over for future generations?
9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion? Interlude
9
Has God forgotten how to be gracious? Has he angrily stopped up his compassion?" Selah
10 And I said, “This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.”
10
It's my misfortune, I thought, that the strong hand of the Most High is different now.
11 But then I recall all you have done, O LORD ; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
11
But I will remember the LORD's deeds; yes, I will remember your wondrous acts from times long past.
12 They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.
12
I will meditate on all your works; I will ponder your deeds.
13 O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you?
13
God, your way is holiness! Who is as great a god as you, God?
14 You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations.
14
You are the God who works wonders; you have demonstrated your strength among all peoples.
15 By your strong arm, you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Interlude
15
With your mighty arm you redeemed your people; redeemed the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah
16 When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to its very depths.
16
The waters saw you, God— the waters saw you and reeled! Even the deep depths shook!
17 The clouds poured down rain; the thunder rumbled in the sky. Your arrows of lightning flashed.
17
The clouds poured water, the skies cracked thunder; your arrows were flying all around!
18 Your thunder roared from the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world! The earth trembled and shook.
18
The crash of your thunder was in the swirling storm; lightning lit up the whole world; the earth shook and quaked.
19 Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there!
19
Your way went straight through the sea; your pathways went right through the mighty waters. But your footprints left no trace!
20 You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds.
20
You led your people like sheep under the care of Moses and Aaron.
