Psalm 88

MSG

NLT

1 God, you're my last chance of the day. I spend the night on my knees before you.
1 O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.
2 Put me on your salvation agenda; take notes on the trouble I'm in.
2 Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.
3 I've had my fill of trouble; I'm camped on the edge of hell.
3 For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.
4 I'm written off as a lost cause, one more statistic, a hopeless case.
4 I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.
5 Abandoned as already dead, one more body in a stack of corpses, And not so much as a gravestone - I'm a black hole in oblivion.
5 They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.
6 You've dropped me into a bottomless pit, sunk me in a pitch-black abyss.
6 You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.
7 I'm battered senseless by your rage, relentlessly pounded by your waves of anger.
7 Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude
8 You turned my friends against me, made me horrible to them. I'm caught in a maze and can't find my way out,
8 You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.
9 blinded by tears of pain and frustration. I call to you, God; all day I call. I wring my hands, I plead for help.
9 My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD ; I lift my hands to you for mercy.
10 Are the dead a live audience for your miracles? Do ghosts ever join the choirs that praise you?
10 Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude
11 Does your love make any difference in a graveyard? Is your faithful presence noticed in the corridors of hell?
11 Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?
12 Are your marvelous wonders ever seen in the dark, your righteous ways noticed in the Land of No Memory?
12 Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?
13 I'm standing my ground, God, shouting for help, at my prayers every morning, on my knees each daybreak.
13 O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.
14 Why, God, do you turn a deaf ear? Why do you make yourself scarce?
14 O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?
15 For as long as I remember I've been hurting; I've taken the worst you can hand out, and I've had it.
15 I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.
16 Your wildfire anger has blazed through my life; I'm bleeding, black and blue.
16 Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.
17 You've attacked me fiercely from every side, raining down blows till I'm nearly dead.
17 They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.
18 You made lover and neighbor alike dump me; the only friend I have left is Darkness.
18 You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.
