New Living Translation NLT
Common English Bible CEB
1 O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.
1
LORD, God of my salvation, by day I cry out, even at night, before you—
2 Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.
2
let my prayer reach you! Turn your ear to my outcry
3 For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.
3
because my whole being is filled with distress; my life is at the very brink of hell.
4 I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.
4
I am considered as one of those plummeting into the pit. I am like those who are beyond help,
5 They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.
5
drifting among the dead, lying in the grave, like dead bodies— those you don't remember anymore, those who are cut off from your power.
6 You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.
6
You placed me down in the deepest pit, in places dark and deep.
7 Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude
7
Your anger smothers me; you subdue me with it, wave after wave. Selah
8 You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.
8
You've made my friends distant. You've made me disgusting to them. I can't escape. I'm trapped!
9 My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD ; I lift my hands to you for mercy.
9
My eyes are tired of looking at my suffering. I've been calling out to you every day, LORD— I've had my hands outstretched to you!
10 Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude
10
Do you work wonders for the dead? Do ghosts rise up and give you thanks? Selah
11 Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?
11
Is your faithful love proclaimed in the grave, your faithfulness in the underworld?
12 Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?
12
Are your wonders known in the land of darkness, your righteousness in the land of oblivion?
13 O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.
13
But I cry out to you, LORD! My prayer meets youfirst thing in the morning!
14 O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?
14
Why do you reject my very being, LORD? Why do you hide your face from me?
15 I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.
15
Since I was young I've been afflicted, I've been dying. I've endured your terrors. I'm lifeless.
16 Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.
16
Your fiery anger has overwhelmed me; your terrors have destroyed me.
17 They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.
17
They surround me all day long like water; they engulf me completely.
18 You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.
18
You've made my loved ones and companions distant. My only friend is darkness.
