The Message Bible MSG
New Living Translation NLT
1 God, put an end to evil; avenging God, show your colors!
1
O LORD, the God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice shine forth!
2 Judge of the earth, take your stand; throw the book at the arrogant.
2
Arise, O Judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve.
3 God, the wicked get away with murder - how long will you let this go on?
3
How long, O LORD ? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat?
4 They brag and boast and crow about their crimes!
4
How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast?
5 They walk all over your people, God, exploit and abuse your precious people.
5
They crush your people, LORD, hurting those you claim as your own.
6 They take out anyone who gets in their way; if they can't use them, they kill them.
6
They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans.
7 They think, "God isn't looking, Jacob's God is out to lunch."
7
“The LORD isn’t looking,” they say, “and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.”
8 Well, think again, you idiots, fools - how long before you get smart?
8
Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on?
9 Do you think Ear-Maker doesn't hear, Eye-Shaper doesn't see?
9
Is he deaf—the one who made your ears? Is he blind—the one who formed your eyes?
10 Do you think the trainer of nations doesn't correct, the teacher of Adam doesn't know?
10
He punishes the nations—won’t he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn’t he also know what you are doing?
11 God knows, all right - knows your stupidity, sees your shallowness.
11
The LORD knows people’s thoughts; he knows they are worthless!
12 How blessed the man you train, God, the woman you instruct in your Word,
12
Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions.
13 Providing a circle of quiet within the clamor of evil, while a jail is being built for the wicked.
13
You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked.
14 God will never walk away from his people, never desert his precious people.
14
The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession.
15 Rest assured that justice is on its way and every good heart put right.
15
Judgment will again be founded on justice, and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it.
16 Who stood up for me against the wicked? Who took my side against evil workers?
16
Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers?
17 If God hadn't been there for me, I never would have made it.
17
Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave.
18 The minute I said, "I'm slipping, I'm falling," your love, God, took hold and held me fast.
18
I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me.
19 When I was upset and beside myself, you calmed me down and cheered me up.
19
When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
20 Can Misrule have anything in common with you? Can Troublemaker pretend to be on your side?
20
Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice?
21 They ganged up on good people, plotted behind the backs of the innocent.
21
They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But God became my hideout, God was my high mountain retreat,
22
But the LORD is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide.
23 Then boomeranged their evil back on them: for their evil ways he wiped them out, our God cleaned them out for good.
23
God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The LORD our God will destroy them.
