1they gave Him 2wine to drinkmixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling* to drink.

And when they had crucified Him, 3they divided up His garmentsamong themselves by castinglots.

And sittingdown, they began to 4keepwatchover Him there.

And above His head they put up the chargeagainst Him which read, "5THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

At that timetworobbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.

And thosepassing by were hurlingabuse at Him, 6wagging their heads
40
and saying, "7You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays, saveYourself! 8If You are the Son of God, comedown from the cross."

In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,

"9He savedothers; He cannot*saveHimself. 10He is the King of Israel; let Him nowcomedown from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
43
"11HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GODRESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "

12The robbers who had been crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him with the same words.

13Now from the sixthhourdarknessfell upon all the landuntil the ninthhour.

About the ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, saying, "14ELI, ELI, LAMASABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

And some of those who were standingthere, when they heard it, began saying, "Thisman is calling for Elijah."

15Immediatelyone of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sourwine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
49
But the rest of them said, "Let us seewhetherElijah will come to save Him."

And Jesus16cried out again with a loudvoice, and yielded up His spirit.
