10 Your mother was ¹like a vine in a vineyard^[a] planted by the water, ²fruitful and full of branches ³by reason of abundant water.

11 Its strong stems became rulers’ scepters; it towered aloft among the thick boughs; ^[b] it was seen in its height with the mass of its branches.

12 But the vine was plucked up in fury, cast down to the ground; ⁴the east wind dried up its fruit; they were stripped off and withered. As for its strong stem, fire consumed it.

13 ⁵Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land.

14 ⁶And fire has gone out from the stem of its shoots, has consumed its fruit, ⁷so that there remains in it no strong stem, no scepter for ruling. This is ⁸a lamentation and has become a lamentation.

INTRODUCTION TO EZEKIEL 19

The subject matter of this chapter is a lamentation for the princes and people of the Jews, on account of what had already befallen them, and what was yet to come, Eze 19:1. The mother of the princes is compared to a lioness, and they to lions; who, one after another, were taken and carried captive, Eze 19:2-9; again, their mother is compared to a vine, and they to branches and rods for sceptres, destroyed by an east wind, and consumed by fire, Eze 19:10-14.
