14
And
1the Word
2became flesh and
3dwelt among us,
4and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of
5grace and
6truth.
15
(
7John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said,
8‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ’”)
16
For from
9his fullness we have all received,
10grace upon grace.
17
For
11the law was given through Moses;
12grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18
13No one has ever seen God;
14the only God, who is at the Father’s side,
15he has made him known.
The Testimony of John the Baptist
19 And this is the
16testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,
17“Who are you? ”
20
18He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ. ”
21
And they asked him, “What then?
19Are you Elijah? ” He said, “I am not. ” “Are you
20the Prophet? ” And he answered, “No. ”
22
So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? ”
23
He said, “I am
21the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord, ’ as the prophet Isaiah said. ”
24
(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. )
