And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, âWho are you? â

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, âI am not the Christ. â

And they asked him, âWhat then? Are you Elijah? â He said, âI am not. â âAre you the Prophet? â And he answered, âNo. â
22
So they said to him, âWho are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? â
23
He said, âI am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, âMake straight the way of the Lord, â as the prophet Isaiah said. â
