The Beginning

1 In the beginning¹ God created² the heavens³ and the earth.⁴ 2 Now the earth was^a formless⁵ and empty,⁶ darkness was over the surface of the deep,⁷ and the Spirit of God⁸ was hovering⁹ over the waters. 3 And God said,¹⁰ "Let there be light," and there was light.¹¹ 4 God saw that the light was good,¹² and he separated the light from the darkness.¹³ 5 God called¹⁴ the light "day," and the darkness he called "night."¹⁵ And there was evening, and there was morning¹⁶--the first day. 6 And God said,¹⁷ "Let there be an expanse¹⁸ between the waters¹⁹ to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it.²⁰ And it was so.²¹ 8 God called²² the expanse "sky."²³ And there was evening, and there was morning²⁴--the second day. 9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place,²⁵ and let dry ground²⁶ appear." And it was so.²⁷
