Stop bringing meaningless offerings!1 Your incense2 is detestable3 to me. New Moons,4 Sabbaths and convocations5-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.
Your New Moon6 festivals and your appointed feasts7 my soul hates.8 They have become a burden to me;9 I am weary10 of bearing them.
When you spread out your hands11 in prayer, I will hide12 my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen.13 Your hands14 are full of blood;1516
wash16 and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight!17 Stop doing wrong,1817
learn to do right!19 Seek justice,20 encourage the oppressed.a21 Defend the cause of the fatherless,22 plead the case of the widow.2318
"Come now, let us reason together,"24 says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;25 though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.2619
If you are willing and obedient,27 you will eat the best from the land;2820
but if you resist and rebel,29 you will be devoured by the sword."30 For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.3121
See how the faithful city has become a harlot!32 She once was full of justice; righteousness33 used to dwell in her-- but now murderers!3422
Your silver has become dross,35 your choice wine is diluted with water.
Your rulers are rebels,36 companions of thieves;37 they all love bribes38 and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them.39
