1 Y Booz subió a la puerta y se sentó allí: y he aquí pasaba aquel redentor del cual Booz había hablado, y le dijo: Eh, fulano, ven acá y siéntate. Y él vino, y se sentó

2 Entonces él tomó diez varones de los ancianos de la ciudad, y dijo: Sentaos aquí. Y ellos se sentaron

3 Y dijo al redentor: Una parcela de tierra que tuvo nuestro hermano Elimelec, vendió Noemí, la que volvió del campo de Moab

4 y yo decidí hacértelo saber, y decirte que las tomes delante de los que están aquí sentados, y delante de los ancianos de mi pueblo. Si hubieres de redimir, redime; y si no quisieres redimir, decláramelo para que yo lo sepa; porque no hay otro que redima sino tú, y yo después de ti. Y el otro respondió: Yo redimiré

5 Entonces replicó Booz: El mismo día que tomares las tierras de mano de Noemí, tomarás también a Rut la moabita, mujer del difunto, para que levantes el nombre del muerto sobre su heredad

6 Y respondió el redentor: No puedo redimir para mí; porque por ventura echaría a perder mi heredad; redime tú, yo te traspaso mi derecho, porque yo no podré redimir

7 Desde hacía tiempo existía esta costumbre en Israel en la redención o contrato, que para la confirmación de cualquier negocio, el uno se quitaba el zapato y lo daba a su compañero; y éste era el testimonio en Israel

8 Entonces el que había traspasado el derecho de redención dijo a Booz: Tómalo tú. Y diciendo esto descalzó su zapato

9 Y Booz dijo a los ancianos y a todo el pueblo: Vosotros seréis hoy testigos de como tomo todas las cosas que fueron de Elimelec, y todo lo que fue de Quelión y de Mahlón, de mano de Noemí

10 Y que también tomo por mi mujer a Rut la moabita, mujer de Mahlón, para que yo levante el nombre del difunto sobre su heredad, para que el nombre del muerto no se pierda de entre sus hermanos y de la puerta de su lugar. Vosotros seréis hoy testigos

11 Y dijeron todos los del pueblo que estaban a la puerta con los ancianos: Testigos somos. El SEÑOR haga a la mujer que entra en tu casa como a Raquel y a Lea, las cuales edificaron la casa de Israel; y tú seas ilustre en Efrata, y tengas nombradía en Belén

12 tu casa sea como la casa de Fares, al que Tamar dio a luz a Judá, de la simiente que el SEÑOR te diere de esta joven

13 Y así Booz tomó a Rut, y ella fue su mujer; y luego que entró a ella, el SEÑOR le dio que concibiera y diera a luz un hijo

14 Y las mujeres decían a Noemí: Loado sea el SEÑOR, que hizo que no te faltara redentor hoy, cuyo nombre será nombrado en Israel

15 El cual será restaurador de tu alma, y el que te sustentará en tu vejez; pues que tu nuera, la cual te ama, le ha dado a luz; y ella es de más valor para ti que siete hijos

16 Y tomando Noemí el hijo, lo puso en su regazo, y fue su aya

17 Y las vecinas le pusieron nombre diciendo: a Noemí ha nacido un hijo; y le llamaron Obed. Este es padre de Jessé, padre de David

18 Y éstas son las generaciones de Fares: Fares engendró a Hezrón

19 y Hezrón engendró a Ram, y Ram engendró a Aminadab

20 y Aminadab engendró a Naasón, y Naasón engendró a Salmón

21 Y Salmón engendró a Booz, y Booz engendró a Obed

22 y Obed engendró a Jessé, y Jessé engendró a David

Rut 4 Commentary

Chapter 4

The kinsman refuses to redeem Ruth's inheritance. (1-8) Boaz marries Ruth. (9-12) Birth of Obed. (13-22)

Verses 1-8 This matter depended on the laws given by Moses about inheritances, and doubtless the whole was settled in the regular and legal manner. This kinsman, when he heard the conditions of the bargain, refused it. In like manner many are shy of the great redemption; they are not willing to espouse religion; they have heard well of it, and have nothing to say against it; they will give it their good word, but they are willing to part with it, and cannot be bound to it, for fear of marring their own inheritance in this world. The right was resigned to Boaz. Fair and open dealing in all matters of contract and trade, is what all must make conscience of, who would approve themselves true Israelites, without guile. Honesty will be found the best policy.

Verses 9-12 Men are ready to seize opportunities for increasing their estates, but few know the value of godliness. Such are the wise men of this world, whom the Lord charges with folly. They attend not to the concerns of their souls, but reject the salvation of Christ, for fear of marring their inheritance. But God did Boaz the honour to bring him into the line of the Messiah, while the kinsman, who was afraid of lessening himself, and marring his inheritance, has his name, family, and inheritance forgotten.

Verses 13-22 Ruth bore a son, through whom thousands and myriads were born to God; and in being the lineal ancestor of Christ, she was instrumental in the happiness of all that shall be saved by him; even of us Gentiles, as well as those of Jewish descent. She was a witness for God to the Gentile world, that he had not utterly forsaken them, but that in due time they should become one with his chosen people, and partake of his salvation. Prayer to God attended the marriage, and praise to him attended the birth of the child. What a pity it is that pious language should not be more used among Christians, or that it should be let fall into formality! Here is the descent of David from Ruth. And the period came when Bethlehem-Judah displayed greater wonders than those in the history of Ruth, when the outcast babe of another forlorn female of the same race appeared, controlling the counsels of the Roman master of the world, and drawing princes and wise men from the east, with treasures of gold, and frankincense, and myrrh to his feet. His name shall endure for ever, and all nations shall call Him blessed. In that Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

INTRODUCTION TO RUTH 4

This chapter relates how an offer was made to the nearest kinsman of Ruth to redeem her, and the field her husband left, which he refused to do, Ru 4:1-8, upon which Boaz redeemed both, and married Ruth before the elders of the city as witnesses, and who congratulated him and her on that occasion, Ru 4:9-12, to whom a son was born, called Obed by the neighbours, Ru 4:13-17 and the chapter is concluded with the genealogy of David, who sprung from him, Ru 4:18-22.
