Now on 1the lastday, the great day of the feast, Jesusstood and cried out, saying, "2Ifanyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

"He who believes in Me, 3as the Scripturesaid, 'From his innermostbeing will flowrivers of 4livingwater.' "

But this He spoke5of the Spirit, whomthose who believed in Him were to receive; for 6the Spirit was not yet given, becauseJesus was not yet7glorified.
Division of People over Jesus
40 Some of the peopletherefore, when they heardthesewords, were saying, "Thiscertainly is 8the Prophet."

Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "9Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?

"Has not the Scripturesaid that the Christcomes from 10the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the villagewhereDavid was?"

So11a divisionoccurred in the crowdbecause of Him.

12Some of them wanted to seize Him, but noonelaidhands on Him.

The 13officersthencame to the chiefpriests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why* did you not bring Him?"

The 14officersanswered, "15Never has a manspoken the waythismanspeaks."

The Phariseesthenanswered them, "16You have not also been ledastray, have you?

"17Noone of 18the rulersorPharisees has believed in Him, has he?

"But thiscrowd which does not know the Law is accursed."

19Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, beingone of them) said to them,

"20Our Law does not judge a manunless* it firsthears from him and knowswhat he is doing, does it?"

They answered him, "21You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that noprophetarises out of Galilee."
