1 Rebelión de Absalón<br />Después Absalón compró un carruaje y caballos, y contrató a cincuenta guardaespaldas para que corrieran delante de él.

In the course of time, Absalom provided himself with a chariot and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him.
2 Cada mañana se levantaba temprano e iba a la puerta de la ciudad. Cuando la gente llevaba un caso al rey para que lo juzgara, Absalón le preguntaba de qué parte de Israel era, y la persona le mencionaba a qué tribu pertenecía.

He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.”
3 Entonces Absalón le decía: «Usted tiene muy buenos argumentos a su favor. ¡Es una pena que el rey no tenga disponible a nadie para que los escuche!

Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.”
4 Qué lástima que no soy el juez; si lo fuera, todos podrían traerme sus casos para que los juzgara, y yo les haría justicia».

And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.”
5 Cuando alguien trataba de inclinarse ante él, no lo permitía. En cambio, lo tomaba de la mano y lo besaba.

Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him.
6 Absalón hacía esto con todos los que venían al rey por justicia, y de este modo se robaba el corazón de todo el pueblo de Israel.

Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.
7 Después de cuatro años,<br /> Absalón le dijo al rey:<br />—Permítame ir a Hebrón a ofrecer un sacrificio al Señor<br /> y cumplir un voto que le hice.

At the end of four years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the LORD.
8 Pues mientras su siervo estaba en Gesur en Aram, prometí que le ofrecería sacrificio al Señor<br /> en Hebrón<br /> si me traía de regreso a Jerusalén.

While your servant was living at Geshur in Aram, I made this vow: ‘If the LORD takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in Hebron. ’ ”
9 —Está bien —le dijo el rey—. Ve y cumple tu voto.<br />Así que Absalón se fue a Hebrón.

The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron.
10 Pero mientras estaba allí, envió mensajeros secretos a todas las tribus de Israel para iniciar una rebelión contra el rey. «Tan pronto como oigan el cuerno de carnero —decía el mensaje— deben decir: “Absalón ha sido coronado rey en Hebrón”».

Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’ ”
11 Absalón llevó consigo a doscientos hombres de Jerusalén como invitados, pero ellos no sabían nada de sus intenciones.

Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter.
12 Mientras Absalón ofrecía los sacrificios, mandó a buscar a Ahitofel, uno de los consejeros de David que vivía en Gilo. En poco tiempo muchos más se unieron a Absalón, y la conspiración cobró fuerza.

While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.
13 David escapa de Jerusalén<br />Pronto llegó un mensajero a Jerusalén para decirle a David: «¡Todo Israel se ha unido a Absalón en una conspiración en su contra!».

A messenger came and told David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.”
14 —Entonces debemos huir de inmediato, ¡si no será muy tarde! —David dijo a sus hombres—. ¡Apresúrense! Si salimos de Jerusalén antes de que llegue Absalón, tanto nosotros como la ciudad nos salvaremos del desastre.

Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.”
15 —Estamos con usted —respondieron sus consejeros—. Haga lo que mejor le parezca.

The king’s officials answered him, “Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.”
16 Entonces el rey salió de inmediato junto con todos los de su casa. No dejó a nadie excepto a diez de sus concubinas para que cuidaran el palacio.

The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left ten concubines to take care of the palace.
17 Así que el rey y toda su gente salieron a pie, y se detuvieron en la última casa

So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted at the edge of the city.
18 a fin de que los hombres del rey pasaran al frente.<br />Había seiscientos hombres de Gat que habían venido con David, junto con los guardaespaldas del rey.

All his men marched past him, along with all the Kerethites and Pelethites; and all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king.
19 Después el rey se dio vuelta y le dijo a Itai, un líder de los hombres de Gat:<br />—¿Por qué vienes con nosotros? Vuelve al rey Absalón porque tú eres un huésped en Israel, un extranjero en el exilio.

The king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you come along with us? Go back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner, an exile from your homeland.
20 Llegaste hace poco, ¿debería forzarte a vagar con nosotros? Ni siquiera sé a dónde iremos. Regresa y llévate contigo a tus parientes, y que el Señor<br /> te muestre su amor inagotable y su fidelidad.

You came only yesterday. And today shall I make you wander about with us, when I do not know where I am going? Go back, and take your people with you. May the LORD show you kindness and faithfulness.”
21 Pero Itai le respondió al rey:<br />—Juro por el Señor<br /> y por el rey que iré dondequiera que mi señor el rey vaya, sin importar lo que pase, ya sea que signifique la vida o la muerte.

But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.”
22 David respondió:<br />—Está bien, ven con nosotros.<br />De modo que Itai y todos sus hombres junto con sus familias lo acompañaron.

David said to Ittai, “Go ahead, march on.” So Ittai the Gittite marched on with all his men and the families that were with him.
23 Entonces todo el pueblo lloraba a gritos cuando el rey y sus seguidores pasaban. Así que cruzaron el valle de Cedrón y fueron hacia el desierto.

The whole countryside wept aloud as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley, and all the people moved on toward the wilderness.
24 Sadoc y todos los levitas también fueron con él cargando el arca del pacto de Dios. Pusieron el arca de Dios en el suelo, y Abiatar ofreció sacrificios<br /> hasta que todos dejaron la ciudad.

Zadok was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.
25 Luego el rey le dio instrucciones a Sadoc para que regresara el arca de Dios a la ciudad: «Si al Señor<br /> le parece bien —dijo David—, me traerá de regreso para volver a ver el arca y el tabernáculo;

Then the king said to Zadok, “Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the LORD’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place again.
26 pero si él ha terminado conmigo, entonces dejemos que haga lo que mejor le parezca».

But if he says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.”
27 El rey también le dijo al sacerdote Sadoc: «Mira,<br /> este es mi plan. Tú y Abiatar<br /> deben regresar a la ciudad sin llamar la atención junto con tu hijo Ahimaas y con Jonatán, el hijo de Abiatar.

The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Do you understand? Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar’s son Jonathan. You and Abiathar return with your two sons.
28 Yo me detendré en los vados del río Jordán<br /> y allí esperaré tu informe».

I will wait at the fords in the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
29 De este modo Sadoc y Abiatar devolvieron el arca de Dios a la ciudad y allí se quedaron.

So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.
30 Entonces David subió el camino que lleva al monte de los Olivos, llorando mientras caminaba. Llevaba la cabeza cubierta y los pies descalzos en señal de duelo. Las personas que iban con él también se cubrieron la cabeza y lloraban mientras subían el monte.

But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went; his head was covered and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up.
31 Cuando alguien le dijo a David que su consejero Ahitofel ahora respaldaba a Absalón, David oró: «¡Oh Señor<br />, haz que Ahitofel le dé consejos necios a Absalón!».

Now David had been told, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “LORD, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”
32 Al llegar David a la cima del monte de los Olivos, donde la gente adoraba a Dios, Husai el arquita lo estaba esperando. Husai había rasgado sus ropas y había echado polvo sobre su cabeza en señal de duelo.

When David arrived at the summit, where people used to worship God, Hushai the Arkite was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust on his head.
33 Pero David le dijo: «Si vienes conmigo sólo serás una carga.

David said to him, “If you go with me, you will be a burden to me.
34 Regresa a Jerusalén y dile a Absalón: “Ahora seré tu consejero, oh rey, así como lo fui de tu padre en el pasado”. Entonces podrás frustrar y contrarrestar los consejos de Ahitofel.

But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘Your Majesty, I will be your servant; I was your father’s servant in the past, but now I will be your servant,’ then you can help me by frustrating Ahithophel’s advice.
35 Sadoc y Abiatar, los sacerdotes, estarán allí. Diles todo lo que se está planeando en el palacio del rey,

Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Tell them anything you hear in the king’s palace.
36 y ellos enviarán a sus hijos Ahimaas y Jonatán para que me cuenten lo que está sucediendo».

Their two sons, Ahimaaz son of Zadok and Jonathan son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with anything you hear.”
37 Entonces Husai, el amigo de David, regresó a Jerusalén y arribó justo cuando llegaba Absalón.

So Hushai, David’s confidant, arrived at Jerusalem as Absalom was entering the city.
