1 Y respondió Job, y dijo:

Then Job replied:
2 Oíd atentamente mi palabra, y sea esto <I>por</I> vuestros consuelos.

“Listen carefully to my words; let this be the consolation you give me.
3 Soportadme, y yo hablaré; y después que hubiere hablado, escarneced.

Bear with me while I speak, and after I have spoken, mock on.
4 ¿Por ventura hablo yo a algún hombre? Y si es así ¿por qué no se ha de angustiar mi espíritu?

“Is my complaint directed to a human being? Why should I not be impatient?
5 Miradme, y espantaos, y poned la mano sobre la boca.

Look at me and be appalled; clap your hand over your mouth.
6 <I>Aun</I> yo <I>mismo</I> , cuando me acuerdo, me asombro, y toma temblor mi carne.

When I think about this, I am terrified; trembling seizes my body.
7 ¿Por qué viven los impíos, y se envejecen, y aún crecen en riquezas?

Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power?
8 Su simiente con ellos, compuesta delante de ellos; y sus renuevos delante de sus ojos.

They see their children established around them, their offspring before their eyes.
9 Sus casas seguras de temor, ni <I>hay</I> azote de Dios sobre ellos.

Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not on them.
10 Sus vacas conciben, no abortan; paren sus vacas, y no malogran su cría.

Their bulls never fail to breed; their cows calve and do not miscarry.
11 Salen sus chiquitos como <I>manada de</I> ovejas, y sus hijos andan saltando.

They send forth their children as a flock; their little ones dance about.
12 Al son de tamboril y cítara saltan, y se regocijan al son del órgano.

They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre; they make merry to the sound of the pipe.
13 Gastan sus días en bien, y en un momento descienden a la sepultura.

They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace.
14 Dicen pues a Dios: Apártate de nosotros, que no queremos el conocimiento de tus caminos.

Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways.
15 ¿Quién <I>es</I> el Todopoderoso, para que le sirvamos? ¿Y de qué nos aprovechará que oremos a él?

Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?’
16 He aquí que su bien no <I>está</I> en manos de ellos; el consejo de los impíos lejos esté de mí.

But their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.
17 ¡Oh cuántas veces el candil de los impíos es apagado, y viene sobre ellos su contrición, y con su ira <I>Dios</I> les reparte dolores!

“Yet how often is the lamp of the wicked snuffed out? How often does calamity come upon them, the fate God allots in his anger?
18 Serán como la paja delante del viento, y como el tamo que arrebata el torbellino.

How often are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by a gale?
19 Dios guardará para los hijos <I>de ellos</I> su violencia; y le dará su pago, para que conozca.

It is said, ‘God stores up the punishment of the wicked for their children.’ Let him repay the wicked, so that they themselves will experience it!
20 Verán sus ojos su quebranto, y beberá de la ira del Todopoderoso.
20
Let their own eyes see their destruction; let them drink the cup of the wrath of the Almighty.
21 Porque ¿qué deleite tendrá el de su casa después de sí, siendo cortado el número de sus meses?

For what do they care about the families they leave behind when their allotted months come to an end?
22 ¿Por ventura enseñará él a Dios sabiduría, juzgando él las alturas?

“Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since he judges even the highest?
23 Este morirá en la fortaleza de su hermosura, todo quieto y pacífico.

One person dies in full vigor, completely secure and at ease,
24 Sus senos están llenas de leche, y sus huesos serán regados de tuétano.

well nourished in body,bones rich with marrow.
25 Y este otro morirá en amargura de ánimo, y no habiendo comido jamás con gusto.

Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having enjoyed anything good.
26 Igualmente yacerán ellos en el polvo, y gusanos los cubrirán.

Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them both.
27 He aquí, yo conozco vuestros pensamientos, y las imaginaciones que contra mí forjáis.

“I know full well what you are thinking, the schemes by which you would wrong me.
28 Porque decís: ¿Qué es de la casa del príncipe, y qué de la tienda de las moradas de los impíos?

You say, ‘Where now is the house of the great, the tents where the wicked lived?’
29 ¿No habéis preguntado a los que pasan por los caminos, <I>por</I> cuyas señas no negaréis?

Have you never questioned those who travel? Have you paid no regard to their accounts—
30 Que el malo es guardado del día de la contrición, del día de las iras son llevados.
30
that the wicked are spared from the day of calamity, that they are delivered from the day of wrath?
31 ¿Quién le denunciará en su cara su camino? Y de lo que él hizo, ¿quién le dará el pago?

Who denounces their conduct to their face? Who repays them for what they have done?
32 Porque él ya será llevado a los sepulcros, y en el montón permanecerá.

They are carried to the grave, and watch is kept over their tombs.
33 Los terrones del arroyo le serán <I>ya</I> dulces; y tras de él será llevado todo hombre, y antes de él <I>han ido</I> innumerables.

The soil in the valley is sweet to them; everyone follows after them, and a countless throng goes before them.
34 ¿Cómo, pues, me consoláis en vano, <I>dado</I> que vuestras respuestas quedan por mentira?

“So how can you console me with your nonsense? Nothing is left of your answers but falsehood!”
