Job 3

LXX

NIV

1 After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day,
1 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.
2 saying,
2 He said:
3 Let the day perish in which I was born, and that night in which they said, Behold a man-child!
3 “May the day of my birth perish, and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’
4 Let that night be darkness, and let not the Lord regard it from above, neither let light come upon it.
4 That day—may it turn to darkness; may God above not care about it; may no light shine on it.
5 But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; let blackness come upon it;
5 May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm it.
6 let that day and night be cursed, let darkness carry them away; let it not come into the days of the year, neither let it be numbered with the days of the months.
6 That night—may thick darkness seize it; may it not be included among the days of the year nor be entered in any of the months.
7 But let that night be pain, and let not mirth come upon it, nor joy.
7 May that night be barren; may no shout of joy be heard in it.
8 But let him that curses that day curse it, he that is ready to attack the great whale.
8 May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.
9 Let the stars of that night be darkened; let it remain , and not come into light; and let it not see the morning star arise:
9 May its morning stars become dark; may it wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn,
10 because it shut not up the gates of my mother's womb, for it would have removed sorrow from my eyes.
10 for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes.
11 For why died I not in the belly? and did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately?
11 “Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?
12 and why did the knees support me? and why did I suck the breasts?
12 Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed?
13 Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest,
13 For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest
14 with kings councillors of the earth, who gloried in swords;
14 with kings and rulers of the earth, who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,
15 or with rulers, whose gold was abundant, who filled their houses with silver:
15 with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.
16 or as an untimely birth proceeding from his mother's womb, or as infants who never saw light.
16 Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day?
17 There the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage; there the wearied in body rest.
17 There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest.
18 And the men of old time have together ceased to hear the exactor's voice.
18 Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver’s shout.
19 The small and great are there, and the servant that feared his lord.
19 The small and the great are there, and the slaves are freed from their owners.
20 For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, and life to those souls which are in griefs?
20 “Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul,
21 who desire death, and obtain it not, digging as treasures;
21 to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure,
22 and would be very joyful if they should gain it?
22 who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave?
23 Death rest to a man, for God has hedged him in.
23 Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
24 For my groaning comes before my food, and I weep being beset with terror.
24 For sighing has become my daily food; my groans pour out like water.
25 For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, and that which I had feared has befallen me.
25 What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.
26 I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; yet wrath came upon me.
26 I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.”
