Luke 21

NLT 1 While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people putting their gifts into the collection box. NIV 1 As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. NLT 2 Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two pennies. NIV 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. NLT 3 "I assure you," he said, "this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. NIV 3 "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. NLT 4 For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has." NIV 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." NLT 5 Some of his disciples began talking about the beautiful stonework of the Temple and the memorial decorations on the walls. But Jesus said, NIV 5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, NLT 6 "The time is coming when all these things will be so completely demolished that not one stone will be left on top of another." NIV 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down." NLT 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will all this take place? And will there be any sign ahead of time?" NIV 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" NLT 8 He replied, "Don't let anyone mislead you. For many will come in my name, claiming to be the Messiah and saying, 'The time has come!' But don't believe them. NIV 8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. NLT 9 And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don't panic. Yes, these things must come, but the end won't follow immediately." NIV 9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." NLT 10 Then he added, "Nations and kingdoms will proclaim war against each other. NIV 10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. NLT 11 There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and epidemics in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs in the heavens." NIV 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. NLT 12 "But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will be accused before kings and governors of being my followers. NIV 12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. NLT 13 This will be your opportunity to tell them about me. NIV 13 This will result in your being witnesses to them. NLT 14 So don't worry about how to answer the charges against you, NIV 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. NLT 15 for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply! NIV 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. NLT 16 Even those closest to you -- your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends -- will betray you. And some of you will be killed. NIV 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. NLT 17 And everyone will hate you because of your allegiance to me. NIV 17 All men will hate you because of me. NLT 18 But not a hair of your head will perish! NIV 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. NLT 19 By standing firm, you will win your souls." NIV 19 By standing firm you will gain life. NLT 20 "And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived. NIV 20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. NLT 21 Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Let those in Jerusalem escape, and those outside the city should not enter it for shelter. NIV 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. NLT 22 For those will be days of God's vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled. NIV 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. NLT 23 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for mothers nursing their babies. For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. NIV 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. NLT 24 They will be brutally killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be conquered and trampled down by the Gentiles until the age of the Gentiles comes to an end." NIV 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. NLT 25 "And there will be strange events in the skies -- signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. NIV 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. NLT 26 The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. NIV 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. NLT 27 Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. NIV 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. NLT 28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" NIV 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." NLT 29 Then he gave them this illustration: "Notice the fig tree, or any other tree. NIV 29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. NLT 30 When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near. NIV 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. NLT 31 Just so, when you see the events I've described taking place, you can be sure that the Kingdom of God is near. NIV 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. NLT 32 I assure you, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these events have taken place. NIV 32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. NLT 33 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will remain forever." NIV 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. NLT 34 "Watch out! Don't let me find you living in careless ease and drunkenness, and filled with the worries of this life. Don't let that day catch you unaware, NIV 34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. NLT 35 as in a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. NIV 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. NLT 36 Keep a constant watch. And pray that, if possible, you may escape these horrors and stand before the Son of Man." NIV 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." NLT 37 Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives. NIV 37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, NLT 38 The crowds gathered early each morning to hear him. NIV 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
