Psalm 51

CEB 1 Have mercy on me, God, according to your faithful love! Wipe away my wrongdoings according to your great compassion! NRS 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. CEB 2 Wash me completely clean of my guilt; purify me from my sin! NRS 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. CEB 3 Because I know my wrongdoings, my sin is always right in front of me. NRS 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. CEB 4 I've sinned against you—you alone. I've committed evil in your sight. That's why you are justified when you render your verdict, completely correct when you issue your judgment. NRS 4 Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. CEB 5 Yes, I was born in guilt, in sin, from the moment my mother conceived me. NRS 5 Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me. CEB 6 And yes, you want truth in the most hidden places; you teach me wisdom in the most secret space. NRS 6 You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. CEB 7 Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow. NRS 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. CEB 8 Let me hear joy and celebration again; let the bones you crushed rejoice once more. NRS 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. CEB 9 Hide your face from my sins; wipe away all my guilty deeds! NRS 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. CEB 10 Create a clean heart for me, God; put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me! NRS 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. CEB 11 Please don't throw me out of your presence; please don't take your holy spirit away from me. NRS 11 Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. CEB 12 Return the joy of your salvation to me and sustain me with a willing spirit. NRS 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. CEB 13 Then I will teach wrongdoers your ways, and sinners will come back to you. NRS 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. CEB 14 Deliver me from violence, God, God of my salvation, so that my tongue can sing of your righteousness. NRS 14 Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance. CEB 15 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. NRS 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. CEB 16 You don't want sacrifices. If I gave an entirely burned offering, you wouldn't be pleased. NRS 16 For you have no delight in sacrifice; if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased. CEB 17 A broken spirit is my sacrifice, God. You won't despise a heart, God, that is broken and crushed. NRS 17 The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. CEB 18 Do good things for Zion by your favor. Rebuild Jerusalem's walls. NRS 18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, CEB 19 Then you will again want sacrifices of righteousness— entirely burned offerings and complete offerings.
