Jeremías 36:19-29

19 —Tanto tú como Jeremías deberían esconderse —le dijeron los funcionarios a Baruc—. ¡No le digan a nadie dónde están!

20 Entonces, los funcionarios dejaron el rollo a salvo en la habitación de Elisama, el secretario, y le fueron a decir al rey lo que había acontecido.

21 El rey Joacim quema el rollo
Luego el rey envió a Jehudí a buscar el rollo y Jehudí lo sacó de la habitación de Elisama y lo leyó al rey, con los funcionarios presentes.

22 Era avanzado el otoño, así que el rey estaba en el cuarto del palacio acondicionado para el invierno, sentado junto a un brasero para calentarse.

23 Cada vez que Jehudí terminaba de leer tres o cuatro columnas, el rey tomaba un cuchillo y cortaba esa sección del rollo. Luego lo lanzaba al fuego, sección por sección, hasta que quemó todo el rollo.

24 Ni el rey ni sus asistentes mostraron ninguna señal de temor o arrepentimiento ante lo que habían oído.

25 Aun cuando Elnatán, Delaía y Gemarías le suplicaron al rey que no quemara el rollo, él no les hizo caso.

26 Entonces el rey mandó a su hijo Jerameel, a Seraías, hijo de Azriel, y a Selemías, hijo de Abdeel, para que arrestaran a Baruc y a Jeremías; pero el Señor
los había escondido.

27 Jeremías vuelve a escribir el rollo
Después de que el rey quemó el rollo en el que Baruc había escrito las palabras de Jeremías, el Señor
le dio a Jeremías otro mensaje. Le dijo:

28 «Toma otro rollo y escribe de nuevo todo tal como lo hiciste en el rollo que quemó el rey Joacim.

29 Luego dile al rey: “Esto dice el Señor
: ‘Tú quemaste el rollo porque allí dice que el rey de Babilonia destruiría esta tierra y la dejaría vacía de gente y de animales.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 36

This chapter gives an account of an impious action of King Jehoiakim's burning the roll of Jeremiah's prophecies read unto him, and the consequence of it. The order to write this roll, the time when, the contents and use of it, are in Jer 36:1-3; the writing of it by Baruch, the order of the prophet to read it to the people on such a day, with the view he had in so doing, Jer 36:4-7; the reading of it by Baruch to the people first, Jer 36:8-10; then to the princes, being sent for by them, upon a report made to them, Jer 36:11-15; the king being acquainted with it, Jehudi was sent to fetch the roll, who read it to the king, Jer 36:16-21; who having heard part of it, burnt it, notwithstanding the intercession of some of his princes to the contrary, Jer 36:22-25; and who also ordered the apprehension of Jeremiah and Baruch, who could not be found, Jer 36:26; upon this a new roll is ordered to be written, Jer 36:27,28; which was done with some additions to it, respecting the destruction of the land, and the people in it, by the Chaldeans; and particularly the death of the king, and his want of burial, Jer 36:29-32.
